General Description
Under the direction of the Dean, Educational Support Services, the Senior Instructional Specialist, Lead Coordinator - Language Center will provide instructional support in reading, writing and computer labs within the Language Center and participate in the planning and development of reading, writing and computer labs.

This is a full-time 10 month position at our Visalia campus. The work schedule is 7:45 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. Monday - Friday. Initial placement is at $40,950.

Job Duties
Job duties of the Senior Instructional Specialist, Lead Coordinator - Language Center include:
  • Lead the English as a Second Language (ESL) course lab component, including regularly scheduled class sessions throughout the week and plan for each of those class sessions. Train new instructional personnel, student tutors, work study participants, and instructional specialists in best practices for one-on-one and group instruction in writing skill development.
  • Develop and implement new assignments, assessments, and other materials for all lab courses, particularly for ESL.
  • Assist students in improving basic reading comprehension, writing, vocabulary, dictionary, grammar and other skills; develop a critical and realistic timetable to work through concepts and materials with each student.
  • Prepare instructional materials in accordance with academic level and student interest; select articles and reading to be used in the lab; prepare handouts, activity sheets and assessments.
  • Participate in the planning and development of ESL reading, writing and computer labs; schedule use of ESL reading, writing, ESL and computer labs.
  • Provide appropriate and effective feedback to students during class sessions to support student's mastery of writing, reading and speaking skills.
  • Communicate with Faculty regarding student progress and changes in curriculum.
  • Work with students on an individual basis during scheduled lab sessions.
  • Provide accurate explanations of specific topics covered in class sessions
  • Assist students with computer skills; explain and demonstrate computer use and reinforce instructor's lessons.
  • Administer assessments to measure student progress; prepare assessment materials as necessary and discuss student progress with instructors.
  • Organize and maintain student progress records; distribute progress records to instructors on a regular basis.
  • Coordinate both morning and evening ESL lab class sessions, including function of the lab and content of each lab class.
  • Prepare and maintain assessment records and student absences; submit to instructors according to established time lines.
  • Coordinate the general function of the Language Center, including times of operation, open lab offerings, etc.
  • Develop additional workshops and instructional sessions for ESL, English and other COS students (e.g. conversation groups for ESL, English Co-Request Courses).
  • Coordinate tutoring services available outside of lab sessions - determine times that are available each semester and guide instructional personnel in providing appropriate feedback for students.
  • Help develop and facilitate tutor trainings with Educational Support Services staff.
  • Assist with registration prep sessions for the ESL program.
  • Develop and maintain website; create newsletters and publications for Language Center, and Educational Support Services division, as requested by the division dean.
  • Perform clerical duties, including inventory, tutor, time sheets, supply records and others. Utilize the District's integrated software in performing the required duties of the position.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience):
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and
  • Two years of experience working with adult level skills development programs including some experience working with computers in an instructional setting.
Desirable Qualification
  • Master's Degree is preferred.

  • Meet schedules and time lines.
  • Work independently with little direction.
  • Operate computers and peripheral equipment properly and efficiently.

  • Train and provide work direction to others.
