Primary Purpose of Organization Unit:
To ensure preservation of peace and public safety through various methods of providing and teaching work - shops to the campus community along with the enforcement of local policy , state and federal laws and by providing support and assistance to the Cam

Primary Purpose of Position:
The responsibilities of the Telecommunications Operator include but not limited to, acting
as the link between the public, Campus community and the Police; accurately relaying information to officers; answering calls for service via radio, telephone, emergency lines, alarm panels, and through person to person contact; providing general campus directions and information to visitors. Telecommunications are responsible for documentation of all activity related to UNC Pembroke Police Department regardless of its nature. Work involves receiving emergent and non-emergent
calls, monitoring alarms,obtaining and relaying information, prioritizing calls/alarms and
coordinating response procedures, dispatching appropriate public safety personnel, and maintaining public safety communications logs and databases. Positions are responsible for
operating a host of complex telecommunications and computer equipment, including multi-line
phone systems, multi-channel,police consoles, two-way radios, scanners, and Division of Criminal Information terminals. Work requires knowledge of applicable Federal Communications
Commission rules and regulations, an understanding of public safety operations, and
skill in the operation of telecommunications technology. These positions require the ability
to multi - task and to remain calm and composed in high-stress situations. Positions maintain confidentiality and discretion in the course of conducting business; works individually and/or with others; and adapts to change and circumstances. Positions may require shift, weekend, holiday and/or overtime work.

Job Description:
Dispatch law enforcement and other emergency resources, initiate notifications by established procedures, and document activities.

Telecommunicator must remain cognizant of pending calls and priorities, and be aware of the status and location of on-duty personnel at all times.

Monitor activities on campus by viewing the University closed circuit camera system and receiving notification from the emergency notification kiosks, answer emergency and non-emergency calls, assess the nature of emergencies to identify other services required and initiate appropriate response protocols as defined by accepted standards and policies for service originating from campus. Determine prioritization of calls when necessary and insure the proper response is initiated.

Maintain accurate daily logs of all Police & Public Safety Department related response activities to include incoming calls for service, alarm activations, emergency phone activations and routine system testing.

Maintain knowledge of all communications equipment and the skills in operation of such including Motorola and Icom two way radio systems, Emergency and non-emergency phones, Closed Circuit Television Monitoring equipment and its maintenance and operation. Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and make timely and appropriate notification of systems issues and submit repair work orders as necessary.

Provide an information point after normal business hours for University related questions. Provide assistance to walk-ins requesting assistance.

Employees may occasionally serve as receptionist and perform various other clerical duties. Other related duties may be assigned as necessary.

Ability to speak concisely and distinctly. Ability to efficiently receive and transmit messages while working under pressure. Ability to use a typewriter. Ability to make quick decisions while working under pressure.

Communication skills are critical in handling citizen complaints and receiving pertinent information by telephone. Must be able to maintain knowledge of the following in order to carry out assigned duties:

Federal Communication Rules and Regulations
State Law
UNCP Policy and Procedures
Criminal Information and Identification Section Rules and Regulations

Employee must know how to direct police, emergency/or other personnel to all locations on campus.

These are temporary part-time positions. The hours for the positions may range from 8 to 24 hours per week. Individuals must be able to work a rotating shift schedule which will include weekends, holidays and holidays (as needed).

Management Preference:
DCI/NCIC certification preferred
