ABOUT THE POSITION(S)

The purpose of this recruitment is to produce a pool of qualified applicants to call upon as-needed for interpreter, realtime captioner, and computer-aided transcriber appointments which range from a duration of several days to a maximum of one year. Such appointments generally work on a temporary, hourly, intermittent (THI) basis, and are required to facilitate communication for deaf/hard of hearing persona in the classroom or other instructional settings. THI appointments will be made in the appropriate job classification, depending upon the needs of the hiring department. You may be considered for available positions in any of these classifications depending on your qualifications. THI positions are not eligible for benefits.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications for Interpreter I:

Qualifying interpreter must have skill in using American Sign Language, or other sign system to meet the need of student(s). Have an in depth knowledge of the interpreting process and comprehensive understanding of the methods and techniques used in communicating with deaf/hard of hearing persons. Additionally, have a solid understanding of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct. Given dialect of the speaker, interpreter needs to have the ability to interpret spoken English into American Sign Language, or other sign system, at a rate appropriate for the assignment. Interpreter needs to be able to provide a high level of interpreting services in complex and technical situations. Additionally, the interpreter needs to demonstrate the ability to work with a diverse student population and must be able to meet the expectation of demonstrating professional behavior, able to fulfill time commitments and possess good communication skills.

Any combination of documented experience, formal training and certification in voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice or transliterating to successfully facilitate communication is required. Incumbents must possess and maintain skills certification in either interpreting or transliteration such as National Interpreter Certification (NIC), CI or CT issued by Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and/or certification provided by the National Association for the Deaf (NAD) level 3 or higher, or comparable certification.

Minimum Qualifications for Interpreter II:

On top of the minimum qualifications required for Interpreter I, at least two years of relative documented interpreting experience in a variety of settings are needed to perform at the level required for the position. Incumbents must possess and maintain skills certification in either interpreting or transliteration such as National Interpreter Certification (NIC), CI or CT issued by Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and/or certification provided by the National Association for the Deaf (NAD) level 4 or higher (level 5 is preferred) , or comparable certification. Degree obtained from a 4 year institution may be essential to provide interpreting services at the level necessary for the position, but is not required. Interpreter II must demonstrate the use of advanced and fluent interpreting techniques for advanced level assignments such as graduate courses and other specialized and/or complex settings. Additionally, the interpreter qualifying for this level must demonstrate the ability to work with a diverse student population, demonstrate professional behavior, be able to fulfill time commitments and possess good communication skills. Incumbent needs to have solid understanding of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.

Minimum Qualifications for Realtime Captioner:

Incumbents must possess a thorough knowledge of court reporting methods and theories, real time software and technology, realtime captioning computer systems and equipment. Captioner must possess comprehensive knowledge of the English language, including grammatical structure, syntax, spelling, vocabulary and punctuation. Have a solid understanding of the industry-recognized code of ethics. Incumbents must be able to caption at a minimum rate of 180 words per minute with a high level of accuracy. 200 words per minute, or higher, is preferred. Captioner must have the ability to listen for continuity, sense and detail while translating. Must develop, maintain and proficiently use a thorough dictionary that enables accurate and fluid translation. Must be able to meet the expectation of demonstrating professional behavior, able to fulfill time commitments, possess good communication skills and be able to submit transcripts in a timely manner. Must have the ability to work with a diverse student population and have general knowledge of Deaf and Hard of Hearing culture. Additionally, realtime captioners are responsible for providing their own equipment and software, including realtime-capable steno machine, laptop computer, display monitor for the consumer, current software or realtime translation, realtime cables and other items for set up. Six to twelve months of realtime captioning experience is required. Six to twelve months of experience in higher education is desired, two years experience in higher education is preferred. Formal training in court reporting and steno methods is required to fulfill position's demand. Graduation from court reporting school is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications for Computer-Aided Transcriber:

This campus does not utilize this particular aspect of the job classification.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

For interpreter, possession of one or more of the following preferred: Interpreting Certificate, transliterating certificate, Comprehensive Skills certificate or one of the Oral Interpreting certificates. Skill in interpreting American Sign language, a manual code for English and fingerspelling or skill in interpreting speech reading hearing-impaired person; experience interpreting in a higher education setting.

As for Realtime captioner, the possession of one of the following is preferred: State of California Certified Shorthand Reporter certificate, Court Reporting Certificate of Completion, Certified CART Provider through the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) (preferred) or possess a comparable industry certification.
