Job Summary

This position identifies and investigates radiation hazards at the university and in the medical center. Contributes to the development, implementation, and evaluation of clinical and research radiation use and safety programs to protect staff, students, faculty, and patients from radiation injury. Provides resolution to radiation problems of moderate complexity. Performs radiation detection equipment testing and calibration. Establishes engineering controls, administrative procedures, and personal protective equipment requirements for radiation work.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:



Program Development
  • Develop and implement assessment methods to characterize work place radiation hazards.
  • Develop and implement corrective action plans to mitigate work place radiation hazards and environmental risks through engineering or administrative controls.
  • Develop technical basis documents, policies, and procedures in such areas as inspection standards, safe-work methods, decontamination procedures, and radiological emergencies.



Analysis, Evaluation, and Problem Solving
  • Conduct non-routine surveillances of university buildings and the medical center for radiation hazards to ensure a safe environment.
  • Operate specialized scientific instruments, including multi-channel analyzers, liquid scintillation counters, personal and large volume air samplers, and portable radiation monitors to quantify exposure hazards.
  • Design environmental surveys and obtain environmental samples, including air, soil, and water samples, to demonstrate compliance with environmental radioactivity regulations. Select and coordinate with external accredited laboratories for analysis.
  • Interpret and characterize radiation measurements and environmental sample results to assess work place and environmental hazards. Maintain records, including electronic files and databases, of measurements and sample results.
  • Certify diagnostic x-ray systems for compliance with state regulations.
  • Design radiation shielding for radiation producing devices.
  • Calibrate radiation detection instruments in accordance with federal and state requirements.



Training and Consultation
  • Prepare and present radiation safety training for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Provide professional development training and mentoring to occupational health and safety technicians.
  • Provide guidance to clinical and research personnel and facilities operations staff on personal protective equipment, including respirator selection and fitting.
  • Evaluate basic and translational research proposals for radiation hazards, safeguards, and risk communication to patients.



Other Duties
  • On-call emergency responder, with responsibility to assess hazards and advise initial responders.
  • Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned, within designated time frame, to include Management Plan tasks.


Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in health physics, nuclear physics, radiological physics, medical physics, or closely related field from an accredited college or university and training in the technical principles, theories, concepts, and techniques of health physics.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in health physics, nuclear physics, radiological physics, medical physics, or closely related field from an accredited college or university; one year of experience in an academic or medical health physics program.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Excellent oral/written communication and interpersonal skills

Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and other computer software/databases; outstanding data management skills, including creation and maintenance of calculational spreadsheets, and use of relational databases

Knowledge of physical and biological effects of radiation

Ability to operate radiation detection and analysis equipment; prepare/present technical reports; conceptualize and communicate fundamental elements of radiological safety to technical/non-technical personnel

Ability to reason logically and accurately; analyze data, facts, and information; draw valid conclusions and propose viable solutions; design and conduct surveys and evaluate health hazards; serve as subject matter expert and provide consultative services. Detail-oriented.

Ability to lift/carry up to 50 pounds; wear a respirator; maintain confidentiality

Knowledge of State and Federal regulations and consensus guidance applicable to radiation safety in an academic/medical setting

Ability to operate standard health physics instrumentation, and interpret measurement results

Ability to maintain confidentiality

Shift/Salary/Benefits

Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (work outside of the normal business hours will likely be required of an employee in an exempt level position)



Pay Grade: 18



Salary Minimum: $48,341 - Midpoint: $65,260



Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
