The Executive Director, People and Culture (ED) is a member of the Office of University Development (OUD) Leadership Team, responsible for overall strategy and workforce planning, talent resources, and facilitating a diverse and positive culture for OUD and the Development Community.

As the ED, you will lead a team of talented professionals tasked with integrating diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and employee engagement efforts within the department. You will support the broader goals of the U-M Development Community by acquiring and retaining top talent, facilitating learning and training for current employees, and supporting organizational development for one of the top higher education development teams in the country. You will be a key champion of diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the organization, working closely with the Executive Director, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the Talent Management team to maintain a safe and respectful fundraising environment.

Responsibilities*
Talent Management Strategy

As a member of OUD's Leadership Team, you will provide counsel, advice and support on staff structure, recruitment and retention, and market review and compensation.

You will:
  • Develop and implement an integrated talent management strategy that supports the key goals and initiatives of OUD and the development community.
  • Cultivate a thriving culture across the Development Community where purpose, commitment and resilience are valued and influence strategy, engagement and collaboration.
  • Lead strategy and launch programs and services associated with talent development, workforce planning, retention and succession strategy and practices.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Director, Finance & Business Performance Measurement to ensure administrative policies and practices are closely aligned.
  • Lead of the Talent Management Advisory Committee (TMAC) whose purpose is to inform overall talent management strategy for the Development Community.
  • Ensure fundraising staff, including our U-M student staff, are able to grow, thrive and contribute openly to a diverse, equitable and inclusive work space.

Talent Acquisition and Retention
  • Provide high level strategy and direction for an efficient and effective recruiting process rooted in equity, relationship-building and hands-on approaches to talent management.
  • Lead the recruiting process on senior searches, as needed.
  • Proactively recruit and retain a diverse, nation-wide talent pool for fundraisers.
  • Collaborate with senior leaders to create and implement employee retention and succession plans.
  • Promote Development careers and grow the future talent pool of fundraising professionals.
  • Increase diversity among OUD staff and improve the retention rate for underrepresented individuals.

Human Resources Strategy
  • Oversee human resource functions within OUD.
  • Act impartially and confidentially to counsel and advise Development Community staff on work-related matters.
  • Ensure equitable compensation across genders, race, and other social identities.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI)
  • Strive to make the university's donor pool more diverse and inclusive by engaging our development partners in DEI practices.
  • Develop and implement strategies to continue to advance the overall intercultural competence of the Talent Management team and OUD staff.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director for DEI to track and report progress related to Talent Management efforts around DEI.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director for DEI to advance supplementary protocols for, organizational response to, and reporting of unwelcome or unwanted interactions that may occur in the workplace.

Leadership Responsibilities

With a focus on implementation and execution, you will partner with HR colleagues, leadership and staff to build, develop and manage talent, make sound business decisions, and develop and maintain productive relationships while demonstrating a high level of integrity.

You will:
  • Manage a team of 14 professionals.
  • Offer thought leadership to OUD's Leadership Team.
  • Continually assess the work environment and identify enhancement opportunities within the Development Community.

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree required; a minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in talent management, preferably with experience in recruiting, training, organizational effectiveness, and employee relations; alternatively experience in development, fundraising or non-profit leadership will also be considered.
  • Experience with human resources, hiring and recruitment practices in a fundraising and higher education environment; highly developed knowledge of business practices, particularly as they relate to confidential personnel matters.
  • Commitment to fostering a positive team environment with an emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion. Strong engagement around cultural awareness, knowledge, and competency.
  • Proven leadership experience and management skills that nurture an accountable, goal-oriented and values-based environment.
  • The ability to serve as a critical partner on talent management to the Vice President and the Leadership Team, displaying evidence of high integrity, honesty, and trustworthiness.
  • Excellent written and oral communicator, including the ability to draft correspondence and reports, as well as edit and proofread.
