General Description
College of the Sequoias Community College District is seeking a candidate for a full-time tenure-track position in the Ethnic Studies Department beginning August 2019.

Job Duties

Provide academic instruction to students in a variety of introductory courses including Social Justice Studies, Black American Studies, Native American Studies, Mexican American Studies, Asian American Studies, and American Ethnic Origins.
Provide leadership for the future development and growth of the Ethnic Studies Department and Associate Degree for Transfer in Social Justice Studies (area of emphasis Chicanx Studies) program.
Assess and develop cognitive abilities, communication skills, and higher order thinking skills among students through appropriate assignments and activities in one-on-one, classroom, and distance mediated instructional settings.
Advise and instruct students regarding programs of study, other institutions of higher education, lifelong learning resources, and effective study skills.
Refer students to support services, programs, resources, and other professionals as appropriate.
Observe and evaluate student performance in meeting course objectives and student learning outcomes through assignments, projects, discussions, and examinations.
Provide feedback in a timely manner to student inquiries in class, online, or during established office hours.
Plan and organize instruction according to approved course outlines and student learning outcomes to maximize student learning in alignment with department, college, and district goals.
Maintain current, accurate records of course enrollment, attendance, student academic progress, course curriculum, and student learning outcomes; prepare and submit data and reports related to course and student progress in a timely manner.
Evaluate and select instructional materials such as textbooks, manuals, software, and tools in collaboration, as appropriate, with discipline faculty.
Revise and update course content and materials of instruction in accordance with new theory, application, and industry developments within the discipline or area of specialization.
Update syllabi and collaborate with discipline faculty on a regular basis to assess and revise measurable student performance indicators for each course.
Participation in the governance of the District by way of committee assignments is expected.
Other responsibilities include maintenance of a number of office hours, full participation in departmental responsibilities and the willingness to create and/or participate in and sustain an atmosphere of equity and inclusion, which is respectful of diversity campus wide.

Qualifications
Candidates must possess the minimum qualifications for the discipline as approved by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors and defined in the Minimum Qualifications for Faculty and Administrators in California Community Colleges handbook. All coursework must be from a recognized accredited college or university. The minimum qualifications for this discipline are as follows:

Master's in ethnic studies field OR
A master's in American Studies/Ethnicity, Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Central American Studies, Latin American Studies, Cross Cultural Studies, Race and Ethnic Relations, Asian-American Studies, or African- American Studies.

Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic social, economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Proven capacity to teach ethnic studies courses, with a comparative, interdisciplinary, and intersectional (race, class, and gender) approach to students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, experiences, and identities, including underprepared and non-traditional students.
Excellence in teaching and working with undergraduate students, particularly, students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences, including underprepared and non-traditional students.
Commitment to creating an intellectual space and providing support for students of color, women, LGBTQIA and underrepresented groups, through teaching and advocacy.
Dedication to equity, inclusion, and social justice that is reflected pedagogically and professionally.
Ability to implement contemporary pedagogical philosophies, methods, and techniques including multi-media to develop and deliver instruction in classroom and lab settings.

Equivalency documents (If necessary)
A minimum of two (2) recent letters of recommendation addressing pertinent experience or equivalent competencies. At least one letter should focus on the teaching skills of the applicant.

Partial reimbursement for travel costs may be available for applicants traveling more than 200 miles for an interview.
