Salary and Benefits
Starting salary placement depends on qualifications, experience and salary budget, and will not exceed $9,167 a month.

This position is eligible for a broad range of benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurances, retirement (CalPERS), tuition waiver, vacation and sick leave. In addition, 14 paid holidays are offered each year; 13 scheduled on specific days and a Personal Holiday that may be taken any time during the year.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Administration and Finance, Financial Services, the Director of Financial Aid (Director) is responsible for the overall administration of the University's Financial Aid Office. The incumbent is responsible for compliance with all federal, state and CSU system policies and guidelines as they relate to financial aid and the submission of required reporting by all deadlines, as well as the operations, financial management, and personnel administration of the Financial Aid Office. The Director is assigned significant responsibility for formulating and administering programs, policies and procedures to ensure compliance and protection of the University's assets.

Major duties of the position include, but are not limited to, the following in support of the Financial Aid Office:
- Oversees the implementation, awarding, and monitoring of federal, state, and private grant, scholarship, loan, and work-study funds;
- Responsible for the accurate, efficient, and timely delivery of student aid;
- Provides oversight of the scholarship program including awarding and distribution;
- Maintains current and comprehensive knowledge of federal and state financial aid regulations: ensures compliance, appropriate reporting and record keeping, and responds to audits;
- Provides leadership and direction to the staff, including supervision, training, evaluation, and team building;
- Ensures that all aspects of the Financial Aid operations reflect a student-oriented philosophy; i.e., execute responsibilities within the parameters of regulations, but with focus on assistance to students and their families to fully utilize funds available to the campus. Develops policies, procedures, forms, informational documents, and other communications with a student-oriented philosophy in mind;
- Provides effective management of personnel in a high profile, stressful environment that encourages continued production and effective service to customers, including students (current and prospective), campus personnel, parents, and the general population;
- Adjudicates appeals regarding decisions made by Financial Aid staff;
- Oversees the preparation of the FISAP report as well as other federal, state, and CSU required annual reports;
- Develops and implements other relevant policies and programs with the objective of enhancing student satisfaction and retention;
- Implements and maintains Financial Aid modules within student administration information systems, such as PeopleSoft;
- Represents Sonoma State University at the CSU system level and in conjunction with other campus departments as part of the outreach and retention team;
- Serves as a member of the Financial Services management team, providing information and advice to senior administrators when requested;
- Establishes a culture within Financial Aid focused on continuous improvement and service to students. This includes, but is not limited to;
  • Periodic reviews of the services provided to students/faculty/staff/other CSU colleagues, always keeping an eye towards improving services and efficiencies
  • Acting in the best interest of SSU students and those who support them
  • Data driven decision-making

    Performs other secondary duties as assigned.

    Duties will primarily take place in an office setting however additional duties may be performed in various locations on the Sonoma State University campus, including working both indoors and outdoors to support and participate in university activities and events. As an exempt employee you have some flexibility in your schedule however must be available during the regular campus hours Monday through Friday to meet the operational needs of the campus and department. The incumbent must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such levels as is determined by the Appropriate Administrator. This position will require occasional travel, by automobile or airplane, and overnight stay to travel to trainings and meetings off campus.

    Qualifications
    This position requires 5 years of progressively responsible and applicable management and/or supervisory experience. A Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience to provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position. The incumbent must have knowledge of the administration requirements of federal, state, and private financial aid programs and possess experience in preparing for audits as well as responding to audits as they occur. Intermediate proficiency with computers, windows operating system and Microsoft Office suite required. Knowledge of Google Suite preferred. Knowledge of higher education software applications including PeopleSoft, Department of Education databases and processes, and an understanding of the procedures and practices within California public education system is highly preferred.

    The incumbent must demonstrate integrity and sound judgment in performing duties; possess the ability to supervise the work of staff and recommend appropriate personnel actions; be able to apply strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills and train and evaluate performance, taking corrective action as needed; deal with stressful situations while maintaining composure; and contribute to a collaborative environment utilizing exemplary communication and problem solving skills as necessary. Must have strong organizational skills; the ability to develop policies and procedures; and the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously, adjusting quickly to changes needed on a daily basis. Must have the ability to effectively communicate with all levels within the university and establish and maintain productive and effective, inclusive working relationships amongst diverse populations including staff, faculty, administration, students, and other internal and external constituents. Must be able to accept constructive feedback and work cooperatively in group situations. Must also possess the ability to operationalize sustainability concepts (economy, society, and environment) into all aspects of performing job duties.

    The duties of this position may include participation in decisions that may have a material financial benefit to the incumbent. Therefore, the selected candidate will be required to file Conflict of Interest Form 700: Statement of Economic Interest on an annual basis, complete ethics training within 6 months of appointment, and attend this training every other year thereafter.
