Tracking Code: 23500239491006

Job Description
Boston University seeks a candidate to serve as Director of the Inner Strength Gospel Choir. Boston University's Inner Strength Gospel Choir (ISGC) is a non-denominational, student-run organization devoted to praise and worship as expressed through Gospel and other African-American musical traditions. Established in 1973 by students seeking a community and an outlet for their authentic expression of faith through Gospel music, ISGC, today, is a diverse vocal ensemble comprising students and alumni from all walks of life with different experiences and beliefs. ISGC rehearses each Sunday evening of the academic year to sing songs of thanks and praise and to support and encourage one another in our daily lives. Each year ISGC hosts three major events: Fall Concert, (November), Spring Concert, (April), and our Annual Tour, (Presidents Day weekend.) Fall Concert and Spring Concert are held on campus at Marsh Chapel or in the Metcalfe Hall of the George Sherman Student Union. For our Annual Tour, ISGC travels to various locations around the country to share our ministry through song and community service and to proudly represent the Boston University community.

Though ISGC is a student organization, with a self-governing executive board, the Director is appointed by and reports to the Director of Music at Boston University Marsh Chapel. ISGC is one of the most vital and visible campus organizations, maintaining close affinities with the Howard Thurman Center, the Office the Dean of Students, the Office of Religious Life, Music at Marsh Chapel, and the broader BU community from the nave of Marsh Chapel and far beyond. The successful candidate will care for the living tradition of this music and its expression within a thriving, diverse, and international campus community across BU's three campuses. The Director of ISGC will plan for recruitment, auditioning, and retaining singing membership, as well as cultivating a growing and active alumni support network. The Director will program for concerts, tours, and other special performances with responsibility to the enduring oral and written musical traditions of African-American expressions of faith and community.

  • A Bachelor's degree is required.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience is required.
  • The ideal candidate will have excellent credential and experience in music of African-American traditions as a musical leader, either vocally or from the keyboard, or both.
