Department Supervisor, Pre-licensure Programs

Job Summary:

The Department Supervisor oversees the administrative services for the Department and the Programs including oversight of student services, academic support services (including admissions, graduate financial aid, curriculum planning), space, property, information technology/computer support, and health and safety. May include overall responsibility for short-term and long-range planning and operational functions. The Supervisor is directly responsible for several of these functions.

The Supervisor's primary reporting relationship is with the Associate Dean for department and program operational responsibilities. The Supervisor functions as a generalist and with considerable autonomy, exercising sound judgment in carrying out responsibilities while working collaboratively with the department chairs, program directors, and other managers in the Dean's office in the various functional areas and other offices throughout the University. The Supervisor seeks assistance from functional experts on complex matters. The Department Supervisor acts as a trusted colleague to both faculty and staff, and serves as a consultant and representative of the Department to other organizations within the University.

Job Responsibilities:

Direct staff and provide leadership to achieve goals and vision of the department.
Responsible for hiring and retaining staff, career coaching, development for a
minimum of 1-2 direct reports, and accountable for the performance of employees.
Supervise student services assistant(s) responsible for administering,
implementing, and interpreting university and department policies and procedures on
issues regarding graduate admission, stipends, financial aid, teaching assistantships,
visa services, graduate and undergraduate courses, student life, and advising.
Interpret, implement and ensure compliance with university academic and
administrative policies and procedures within an operating unit. Recommend new
internal policies, guidelines and procedures.
May evaluate business processes and operational effectiveness. Analyze and
resolve complex issues and provide alternative solutions as necessary. May lead
process improvement for the department and program.
Manage the direction of internal academic and administrative policy development
for programs and administrative operations.
Monitor the finances of the department.
Advise faculty and deans on programmatic and policy development. Provide input
to on academic and administrative policies and guidelines.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelors degree or equivalent work experience required. Masters degree preferred. Minimum 3 years of increasingly responsible work experience. Work in academic setting preferred. Excellent understanding of technology. Detail oriented and highly organized, with ability to balance competing priorities. Excellent oral and written communication skills; including the ability to communicate on a professional level with groups and individuals across the School and the University and with external constituents, ability to edit and proofread complex documents, and ability to draft original correspondence. Strong interpersonal and client relationship skills, including the ability to work with a highly diverse population of students, staff and faculty. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to exchange non-routine information using tact and persuasion and the ability to work and communicate with a highly diverse constituency, from new university graduates to C-level executives. Ability to travel, and work evenings and weekends.
