The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Instructor, Dental Hygiene/Supervising Dentist, Foothill College.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:

Under the direction of the Division Dean, Biological and Health Sciences, provide classroom, laboratory and clinical instruction in the Dental Hygiene Program. Primary area of responsibility will consist of: dental supervision in the dental hygiene clinic, didactic lectures and laboratory teaching assignments, which may include local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, periodontics, oral biology, dental materials, dental emergencies, oral pathology, and interim therapeutic restorations.

Secondary areas may include: student advising, serving on the dental hygiene admissions committee, assisting the clinic coordinator with calibration of clinical faculty, maintenance of the clinical facility, as well as provide routine tasks to insure the smooth operation of the clinical program.

In addition to contractual teaching duties, all full-time faculty are expected to participate actively in their disciplines, department activities, and the general intellectual life and governance of the college. Part of the teaching assignment may be in the evening and/or online. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

1. Advancing equitable student learning through dedicated, exemplary instruction in accordance with established course outlines.
2. Participating in the assessment of student learning outcomes for courses and programs; developing and implementing student learning outcomes assessment processes for courses and programs.
3. Collaborating in the development and revision of curriculum and in program review.
4. Engaging in department program improvement initiatives.
5. Participating in department, division, and college committees.
6. Participating in professional development activities, both departmental and college-wide.
7. Maintaining current knowledge in the subject matter area and implement effective teaching/ learning strategies.
8. Maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
9. Informing students of course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance requirements.
10. Preparing and grading class assignments and examinations and informing students of their academic progress.
11. Maintaining attendance, scholastic, and personnel records and submitting them according to published deadlines.
12. Posting and holding sufficient and regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy.
13. Participating in College's shared governance processes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, cultural, disability, religious background and sexual orientation of community college students and staff.
2. Dental degree from an accredited university.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS SET BY THE DENTAL BOARD OF CALIFORNIA AND COMMISSION ON DENTAL ACCREDITATION:

In addition to the minimum qualifications above

1. A current, active California DDS/DMD license in good standing with required certification in BLS for Healthcare Provider.
2. As per CODA accreditation standards, completed thirty (30) hours of teaching methodology prior to July 2017.
3. Current knowledge of the specific areas of instruction.
4. Minimum of two years full time clinical practice as a Dentist.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Experience as a clinical instructor/supervising dentist in a dental hygiene program.
2. Experience as a didactic instructor in a dental hygiene program.
3. Knowledge of the theoretical and current evidence based practices of the subject matter areas taught, which may include: infection control, medical histories, patient evaluations, interim therapeutic restorations, local anesthesia, periodontics, pathology, pharmacology, and medical/dental emergencies.
4. The ability to design and apply varied teaching strategies to successfully engage, inspire and retain students with diverse backgrounds and learning styles, using principles and process of instructional design and curriculum development.
5. Commitment to professional growth and development and to continued innovation and improvement of teaching.
6. Involvement in collaborating harmoniously with faculty to successfully achieve program goals and objectives.
7. Participation in professional dental hygiene educational organization(s).

In addition, the successful candidates will demonstrate:

1. Supervision of dental hygiene students while working with diverse patient populations in the clinical environment.
2. Strong communication and teaching skills. (A teaching demonstration will be required as part of the interview process).
3. Address stressful events, created by hostile students or patients by (a) maintaining emotional control, (b) listening without judgment or retaliation, (c) reasoning objectively and consistently, (d) keeping at the forefront the best interests of the student or patient, and (e) maintaining professionalism and due process.

1. Indoor, classroom, laboratory and clinic environments.
2. Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person.
3. Vision sufficient to read various materials and to monitor student safety in the clinic setting.
4. Dexterity of hands to perform the tasks required of the position.
5. Endurance within a classroom and clinical settings, teaching students while standing, sitting, or walking throughout the classroom, clinic and laboratory.
6. Skill in routine safe handling of hazardous chemicals and chemical waste in the dental clinic environment.
