Job Description Summary
The School of Social Policy & Practice (SP2) at the University of Pennsylvania is seeking a visionary to serve as its inaugural Chief Creative Officer. The Chief Creative Officer is responsible for developing and implementing a creative, holistic school wide strategy that elevates the school's brand, invigorates the school's unique identity, and promotes its mission to advance social impact, innovation, and justice. The Chief Creative Officer will drive the creative pulse of the school and increase the impact of its work at the School, the University, the City of Philadelphia and beyond. The Chief Creative Officer collaborates with multiple teams across the School, the University and in the community including, but not limited to the following groups: strategy, institutional advancement, communications, admissions, other schools and departments and community partners. The Chief Creative Officer is responsible for leading the school in branding, marketing, design, media outreach, and message development. The Chief Creative Officer reports to the school's Chief Strategy Officer and supervises a team of two individuals.

The Chief Creative Officer will:
  • Develop, refine and implement a comprehensive school-wide strategic vision, branding and marketing plan

  • Identify, develop and negotiate partnerships, including formal agreements as necessary, that advance SP2's brand and mission

  • Create new marketing and program strategies that lead to new revenue streams

  • Oversee/directly manage multiple projects, adjust priorities as needed and steward partner relationships. Work collaboratively with partners to create branded assets that achieve SP2's goals, mission, and vision. Develop and maintain strong partner and team relationships.

  • Work across many projects/initiatives, managing details throughout project lifecycles, ensuring that deliverables are executed in a timely manner

  • Set vision during team meetings/ for each project and ensure regular briefings/ updates to key partners. Ensure efficiency through the use of key technology, including customer relationship management systems and other tools e.g., to automate marketing campaigns

  • Ensure compliance with Penn's brand standards and integration of messaging across all channels.

  • Participate in various departmental and school wide meetings. Support related student/ alumni/ partner efforts.

  • Manage oversight of operations, budget, staff, and all events/ initiatives within the assigned area. Ensure coordination of all activities across relevant staff groups e.g., content specialists, marketing coordinators and student service teams

    * All SP2 staff are required to participate in convocation and graduation ceremonies as needed.

    Job Responsibilities
    • Working with the Chief Strategy Officer, develop a school-wide strategic branding and marketing plan. Drawing on research and insight to anticipate future trends, guide the school's creative messaging. Leverage cutting edge media, art and design strategies to accomplish the branding strategy Evaluate the current status of peer school landscapes and markets to inform new, relevant and useful messages and branding for SP2.


    • Promote cross school collaboration throughout the university to promote shared excitement for creative concepts through brainstorming sessions, team meetings, and other strategic tools. identifying and developing partnerships that further the work of the Community and negotiate any necessary agreements.


    • Working with the Chief Strategy officer, and within 6 months of hiring, formulate short- and long-term creative goals and strategies for communicating, implementing, and achieving successful rollout of SP2 rebranding. Renew goals and strategies on an annual basis.


    • Works collaboratively in a team environment, with both internal and external partners. Develop and maintain strong client and team relationships. Ensures compliance with Penn's brand standards and integration of messaging across all channels. Participates in various departmental and school wide meetings. Supports student/ alumni/ partner related events. Sets vision during team meetings/ for each project and ensures regular briefings/ updates to key partners. Ensures use of key technology, including customer relationship management systems and other tools such as monthly digital content, automated communication programs, etc


    • Management oversight of operations, budget, staff and all event/ initiative within the assigned area/ across Penn. Ensure coordination of all activities across various staff groups e.g., content specialists, marketing coordinators and student service teams


    • Supervise SP2's Senior Associate Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications and have a dotted line of supervision to the Marketing & Communications Writer.


    • Perform additional duties as assigned, including participation in convocation and graduation ceremonies as needed.


    Qualifications
    • Degree in Fine Arts, graphic design, marketing, communications, visual design, media, technology or journalism, and a minimum of five years' experience in a related field, preferably in a leadership or management role; equivalent combination of education and experience is required. This position requires a deep-seated understanding of project management, design and brand development, marketing, as well as a broad exposure to a variety of branding and marketing strategies. The ideal candidate will have the ability to nurture and adapt an existing brand to suit changing circumstances within the relevant higher education environment and a demonstrated track record of developing and implementing impactful, creative approaches. They will also possess exceptional communication skills and ability to collaborate across the various schools within the University, while translating ideas into actionable projects.

    Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
