Salary and Benefits
Starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $4,104 to $5,917 a month.

This position is eligible for a broad range of benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurances, retirement (CalPERS), tuition waiver, vacation and sick leave. In addition, 14 paid holidays are offered each year; 13 scheduled on specific days and a Personal Holiday that may be taken any time during the year.

Conditions of Employment
This is a full time, temporary, exempt position. Reappointment to this position is dependent upon the individual's performance as well as administrative and budgetary considerations. The university reserves the right to terminate this appointment earlier than the scheduled expiration date.

Reporting to the Senior Associate Director of Athletics, the Senior Strategic Communications & Operations Specialist is responsible for all functions involving media relations, in-game event management, maintaining historical records, and NCAA-mandated statistics for assigned intercollegiate teams. The incumbent is responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with relevant internal and external constituents to ensure that the public receives relevant, timely, and desired information about the intercollegiate athletics and its programs.

Working under general direction on a broad range of projects, the incumbent provides strategic direction to develop communication, marketing and public affairs plans to support long-term objectives of the Athletics Department while increasing the visibility of the University's athletic programs.

Major duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Independent performance of specialized and varied communication assignments related to public and media relations and athletics marketing including developing media relations plans.
- Coordinates press conferences as needed (special event, postgame); coordinates media needs before, during and after events.
- Produces weekly sports updates and distributes them electronically to opponents, media, fans, and staff; maintains department website; oversees the video production of sporting events.
- Writes press releases, including post-game stories, student-athlete signings, awards, new hire announcements, rankings, etc. for assigned sports; maintains photo files of coaches, staff, and student-athletes for use in brochures, on the web, and in the media; pitches feature story ideas to local, regional, and national media outlets; updates student-athlete hometown media outlets; strategically develops, produces, and implements creative marketing content, video, social media and website campaigns for the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
- Maintains and updates all-time statistical record database; maintains database of student athlete biographical information.
- Provides reports of weekly and yearly statistics to CCAA and NCAA; generates game statistics using computer-based programs (The Automated Scorebook, State Crew, etc.).
- Assumes duties as official scorer, PA announcer, scoreboard operator, etc. as needed; serves as play-by-play announcer, as needed, on Seawolf Sports Network.
- Facilitates interaction with coaches, student-athletes, media relations, administrators.
- Serves on committees and provides lead coordination of award programs, including Student-Athlete Award Night (The Wolfies), nominating student athletes for Player of the Week and post-season awards.
- Represents Sonoma State University at CoSIDA and national post-season events, as needed.
- Provides lead work direction to staff and on-site work direction to student assistants at home contests, which includes event management, and coordination duties to ensure event student assistants take scheduled meal breaks and record times worked.

Operations:
- Develops and implements marketing and promotion plans to maximize exposure, and attendance for all programs in alignment with the overall strategic plan; solicits outside parties to arrange for group ticket sales to Athletics department events.
- Coordinates social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat etc.) as it pertains to marketing and promotions; coordinates the distribution of marketing materials to sponsors, local vendors and University departments; and develops and implements in-game promotions.
- Develops student and community outreach and public relations plans; serves as the liaison with student organizations and community groups as it pertains to increasing awareness and game attendance; and engages in various community outreach initiatives.
- Develops relationships with current and potential clients and represents Sonoma State at various networking events.
- Oversees game day operations, including set up and break down for events, writing scripts, PA content, sponsor fulfillment, music/band coordination, and spirit squads.
- Assists the Senior Associate Directors with sales of a full menu of group ticket packages to corporations and the general public.

Perform other secondary duties as assigned.

Duties take place in an office setting located at Sonoma State University, with additional duties performed both indoors and outdoors in various locations on and off campus as it relates to coordinating and supporting events and programs. As an exempt employee you have some flexibility in your schedule, however, you must be available during the regular campus hours Monday through Friday to meet the operational needs of the campus and department. Evening and weekend hours may be required and will be specified only by the supervisor to meet operational needs. Incumbent will travel (by air, bus, automobiles) to conference, regional, and national post-season events with teams, including overnight stays away from campus. The incumbent must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such levels as the Appropriate Administrator determines.

This position requires, with or without reasonable accommodations, the ability to frequently sit, move or stand to work in office and/or game facilities, be at a computer for 6-8 hours/day, occasionally reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop and kneel and lift objects of up to 50 lbs in weight.

Qualifications
This position requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and up to two years of related professional or technical experience. Three to five years of collegiate athletic media relations experience strongly preferred. In addition, the incumbent must possess a comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of communication, public affairs, media, marketing, and/or media relations theories and concepts in order to develop and execute communication strategies and plans to promote the University's Athletics Department. Expert knowledge of university communication objectives and ability to translate them into effective communication and media campaigns, along with expert writing, editorial and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in the composition of various communication vehicles are necessary for success in this role. This position requires solid computer skills including, but not limited to, advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite and experience using the internet as a research tool. Intermediate skills with desktop publishing software (such as lnDesign, Photoshop, and video editing software such as iMovie, Adobe Premier and Adobe After Effects) required, along with thorough knowledge of and ability to use effectively media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, SnapChat, YouTube, HootSuite). Experience with Stat Crew, Next Gen, BoxCast, TheFOSH, Filevilla, SIDEARM, SIDEARM ftp server, SIDEARM xml, VidSwap, VolleyMetrics, and/or livestat preferred.

- Ability to perform detailed work with accuracy under time pressures.
- Ability to provide lead work direction;
- Expert networking and interpersonal skills including strong consultative and persuasive skills to work with internal and external constituents and the media.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective inclusive working relationships amongst diverse populations including staff, faculty, administration, students, and other internal and external constituents.
- Must be able to accept constructive feedback and work cooperatively in group situations.
- Must also possess the ability to operationalize sustainability concepts (economy, society, environmental) into all aspects of performing job duties.
