Assistant Professor or Lecturer

William Paterson University invites applications for a tenure track or lecturer position, based on candidate credentials, interest, and experience, in the Department of Computer Science within the College of Science and Health. Applicants for this full-time appointment are invited from both academia and industry with a minimum of a master's degree. Position overview: This position is an integral part of a thriving and energetic department that is committed to excellent college-level teaching, proactive and innovative classroom activities, engaging scholarship and research production, and participation in departmental functions. Faculty are responsible for ensuring that students graduate with the requisite skills to go on to advanced study or secure employment as programmers, system analysts, software engineers, database administrators, network and security specialists, among others. The position reports to the chairperson of the department.

Department overview: The Department of Computer Science is located within the College of Science and Health, one of four colleges at William Paterson University. We offer a comprehensive program in both the theory of Computer Science and its applications. Our hands-on oriented Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology (IT) and our internationally accredited (ABET) Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science (CS) prepare students for graduate studies and a variety of careers. The department is growing rapidly with the introduction of an MS in Computer Science program and BS in IT - Cybersecurity Track, both to launch in Fall 2024. We encourage students to engage in research that is supported and conducted by faculty and on-site state-of-the-art computing technology. We also encourage and support student internship opportunities.

Primary duties and responsibilities:
  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, online and in person; opportunity to teach in winter or summer sessions for additional compensation.
  • Develop and deploy innovative teaching approaches that realize student learning outcome achievement.
  • Engage in assessment of student learning as well as program and accreditation assessment and reporting requirements.
  • Participate in departmental, college, and university activities appropriate to the appointment.
  • Engage in scholarship and professional development appropriate to the appointment.
  • Contribute to student success by providing consistent and effective support and guidance through role modeling and mentoring; advising where needed and being available to the students for their questions and needs.
  • Stay up-to-date on changes in pedagogy, research, careers, and other advances within the discipline.


Required qualifications:
  • Minimum master's degree from an accredited university for lecturer position; specialization/experience in cybersecurity preferred.
  • Earned doctorate (or ABD with degree completion by March 1, 2025) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or related field for tenure-track position with evidence of scholarship/research activity; specialization in cybersecurity preferred. Appointment can also be as a post-doc with opportunity of transformation to a tenure-track line.
  • Evidence of teaching success and commitment to working in a student-centered environment.
