ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
Student Housing & Residential Life provides an environment that supports and empowers students to learn and grow in their residential communities and beyond. CSUMB's residential communities are capable of housing more than 50% of the student body, with a capacity of more than 2500 bed spaces on Main Campus in residence halls, suites and apartments, and 1350 bed spaces on East Campus in apartments. On-campus housing for individual students in Main Campus and East Campus, and on East Campus for students with families is a significant recruitment and retention tool for the University.

POSITION SUMMARY:
While this position is under the general supervision of the area Community Director (CD), the Assistant Community Director (ACD) directly reports to both the assigned area Community Director and the Assistant Director. The ACD is responsible for assisting in building relationships and fostering a community that supports a diverse population of residence hall and/or apartment students to grow and develop individually and collectively, striving for personal and academic success. This position's structure is to support the Residential Education program as well as the personal and professional development of the Assistant Community Director. Assisting in developing relationships and community to enhance student learning is central to the work of this position. ACD may be asked to perform other duties as assigned and deemed necessary by the area Community Director or Student Housing and Residential Life leadership team members.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
Area Management: Co-supervise, assess, and evaluate 12-16 Resident Advisors (RA). Assist in the hiring, training, and evaluation of all student leaders in assigned area. Assist in coordination of the administrative functions of a residence hall and/or apartment living which includes; facility management, maintenance, information desk operations, room assignments, room transfers, and student leader staffing structure. Attend meetings regularly; RA 1-1 meetings, area staff meetings, and department staff meetings deemed necessary. Provides leadership in promoting an atmosphere within the residential communities that supports academic achievement and fosters responsible decision making. Coordinate community and student development through assisting the area CD with academic, social justice, sustainability, and service learning initiatives, faculty involvement programming, student government advising, and the development of living learning programs within assigned area.

Individual and Group Student Development: Assist in establishing a positive atmosphere in the residential community that is conducive to student academic and developmental success. Provide advice and mentoring for individual students, student leaders, and student groups. Promote the development of a multicultural community through assisting students in establishing a genuine respect for, and appreciation of personal differences. Assist in creating an environment that encourages students to grow intellectually, socially, emotionally, physically, interpersonally, and ethically toward personal autonomy and interdependence. Resolve conflicts and encourage communication among staff and residents. Respond to requests and inquiries from university personnel, students, and parents or family members of residents with the guidance of the area Community Director.

Advising/Mediating: Establish meaningful relationships with residents in the community, providing advising when residents experience academic, personal, developmental, and/or community difficulties. Refer students to appropriate university and/or community resources. Intervene and assist in the resolution of interpersonal and inter group conflicts, which may disrupt the normal routine of a residential community and student learning. Provide informal individual and group mediations to resolve roommate or community conflicts. Assist in establishing appropriate agreements/compromises to address student concerns. Keep supervisor informed of all noteworthy incidents occurring in the residence hall community, providing follow-up with students as necessary. Address behavioral problems and emergencies.

Program Development: Support CDs in assisting RAs in the development of active and passive activities designed to meet the needs of community residents and based on the department's programming model and Living Learning Programs. Attend and assist department welcome events, new student and/or transfer student orientations, tours, and other campus wide events.

Administration: Perform a variety of administrative duties assigned by area Community Director, including but not limited to, reports, roommate mediation agreements, check-in/check-out assistance, room transfers, scheduling, planning, and organizing events, and sharing information with supervisors and leadership team. Respond to daily requests for information and assistance from Student Housing & Residential Life staff, residents, and campus partners.

Student Conduct: Support Community Director with duties assigned that may include, but not limited to, scheduling conduct hearings for area CD, reviewing Incident Reports (IRs), sending and receiving communication with residents regarding their conduct cases, provide feedback regarding mediation meetings facilitated, and support follow through of sanctions assigned. Understand and uphold University and Student Housing & Residential Life policy and community standards. Confront and report violations when observed, as well as assisting RAs with the resolution of difficult confrontation situations.

Facilities Management: Support and assist area CD in monitoring physical condition of residence hall, suite, and apartment areas. Report and follow-up on work requests, damages, and facility emergencies when assigned.

Successful candidates will possess: a working knowledge of student development theory, group dynamics, and current issues and trends in higher education; an understanding of student development, staff development, leadership development, and multicultural issues; working knowledge of management techniques and personnel practices; ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to departmental and university-wide goals; solid administrative and organizational skills (including the ability to effectively utilize computer hardware and software tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Gmail, Google Drive); effective interpersonal and communication skills; the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others; the ability to make reasoned and balanced decisions in moderately complex situations; the ability to rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation and functions of Student Housing & Residential Life, as well as the greater University Corporation, and CSUMB organizations.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
Equivalent to an Associates degree, in Business Administration or a closely related field AND two year of experience working in Student Housing and Residence Life, such as a Residential Advisor, or in a related higher education department position. A Bachelors degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one year of the required experience. Previous experience as a student leader or staff member (such as a Resident Advisor or Front Desk Assistant) for a Student Housing and Residence Life department or in a related higher education department position strongly preferred.

Specialized Skills:

Must be available to work evening and weekends when necessary. Demonstrated technical literacy with electronic mail, mail merges, data entry, electronic scheduling, and internet communication software. Ability to work in an occasional high-pressured environment. Ability to operate a wide variety of office equipment and independently troubleshoot problems. Demonstrated ability to address the essential functions associated with this position including the knowledge and abilities identified above. Ability to complete and pass training in Defensive Driving. Must continue to meet the established driving standards as a condition of employment.



Preferred Qualifications:

Additional experience as live-in staff and Bachelors Degree in Business Management, College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Sociology, or related field highly desirable. Ability to display strong written and verbal communication skills. Able to work in both a team and independently by prioritizing multiple projects, job duties, and responsibilities. Proficient in Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Publisher). Proficient in Google Drive. Professional career interest in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Sociology, or related field highly desirable. Schedule allows desirable candidate to be present and available for professional staff and student trainings that typically are at the end of July through August, and beginning of January each academic year (Specific dates will be provided upon determination.).

Compensation and Benefits:
The University Corporation is committed to providing our employees with a comprehensive program that rewards efforts that are appreciated by your colleagues, students, and the customers we serve. This position is full time, 30-40 hours per week. The hourly range for this position is $16.00 $18.00 per hour, dependent upon experience. The incumbent is provided a partial meal plan as part of the total compensation package and is expected to interact and engage in conversation with residents as part of the meal plan. A fully furnished (if desired) 1 or 2 bedroom suite or apartment are also included.

This is a non-exempt position and as such is eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance benefits, contributory retirement plan, TSA (403b), 13 paid holidays per year and other benefits. University Corporation positions are at-will employment.
