Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
The Coordinator, Environmental Health & Safety provides technical and operational support for the College's environmental health and safety programs, with primary responsibility for hazardous materials, hazardous and biohazardous waste management, EHS inspections, hazard communication, safety training, and related compliance activities. The position conducts inspections and audits, provides technical guidance to College departments, coordinates hazardous waste activities, delivers or coordinates required safety training, supports incident investigations and hazard assessments, and assists with implementation of College EHS policies, programs, and procedures.

  • Coordinate the College's day-to-day hazardous and biohazardous waste program, including collection, storage, packaging, transportation, disposal, vendor coordination, and review of waste profiles, manifests, and related documentation.
  • Conduct inspections and provide technical guidance to departments regarding hazardous materials handling, storage, labeling, transportation, disposal, and applicable OSHA, EPA, RCRA, DOT, and Illinois requirements.
  • Conduct EHS inspections, audits, and workplace hazard assessments; identify chemical, biological, physical, and environmental hazards and recommend corrective actions.
  • Document findings, monitor corrective actions, and communicate unresolved or significant concerns to the Manager; provide technical guidance regarding safe work practices, controls, PPE, chemical compatibility, storage, and emergency procedures.
  • Assist departments with OSHA Hazard Communication requirements, including Safety Data Sheets, labeling, employee information, chemical storage, compatibility, PPE, exposure controls, and safe handling practices.
  • Serve as a technical resource to faculty, staff, supervisors, and departments regarding hazardous materials, chemical safety, and related EHS requirements.
  • Identify EHS training requirements, provide or coordinate required training, establish training schedules, and monitor completion and records in accordance with College and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct skills testing and qualification activities for forklifts, mobile elevated work platforms, and other applicable equipment.
  • Participate in job hazard analyses, accident and incident investigations, emergency preparedness exercises, drills, and tabletop exercises; provide technical recommendations and assist with corrective actions.
  • Participate in departmental safety meetings, College safety committees, and working groups and provide technical EHS expertise as assigned.
  • Assist with implementation of College EHS policies, procedures, programs, and guidelines; monitor regulatory requirements and communicate changes or emerging compliance issues to the Manager and affected departments.
  • Maintain accurate EHS records and prepare reports and documentation related to inspections, training, hazardous waste, audits, and compliance activities; assist with identifying opportunities to improve EHS programs and reduce workplace risk.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


  • Qualifications:

    • Education
      • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Chemistry, or a related field required or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
      • Certification for Hazardous Materials Emergency First Response or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager required.
    • Experience
      • Minimum of one year experience in environmental health and safety, hazardous materials management, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or a related field.
      • Experience conducting workplace inspections, audits, safety training, hazard assessments, or hazardous materials/waste management required.
      • Working knowledge of applicable OSHA, EPA, DOT, and state environmental and safety requirements required.
      • Experience working with hazardous chemicals, biological materials, regulated waste, or specialized equipment preferred.


    Working Conditions:

  • Environmental testing equipment.
  • Classroom setting to conduct employee training on proper handling of hazardous materials and chemicals.
  • Responds to air quality concerns which may involve investigating the source of objectionable odors whenever they occur and conducts air sampling to determine corrective action.
  • On call 24 hours per day to respond to hazardous waste or hazardous chemical spills or possible exposure to chemicals and to use proper protection and equipment to clean up as required for a Certified Industrial Emergency Responder.
  • This position requires a background check and drug screen.

    Hiring Range:
    11 Hourly Starting salary beginning at $31.97, based on education and experience
