The Data Coordinating Center's IT group has an immediate need for an Information Systems Engineer. This position will report directly to the IT Supervisor. The Information Systems Engineer is essential in upholding and enhancing the technical framework of our research data center, which operates continuously to support critical research activities. The role demands a professional with extensive experience in on-premises data center management, and a strong acumen in security protocols. The successful candidate will be proficient in creating and maintaining server environments and will value the autonomy of their role while appreciating the dynamics of working within a supportive and collaborative IT team.

As an Information Systems Engineer, your responsibilities will include:
- Maintain data center hardware throughout its lifecycle, including installation, configuration, firmware updates, troubleshooting, repair coordination, and decommissioning activities.
- Administer and support virtualized environments, including host systems and hypervisor platforms, performing firmware management, capacity planning, performance tuning, routine maintenance, monitoring, troubleshooting, and hardware lifecycle support.
- Design, implement, maintain, and support secure, reliable, and resilient system environments that meet business, operational, and customer requirements.
- Troubleshoot and resolve system, server, and infrastructure issues, including conducting root cause analysis, identifying long-term solutions, and escalating complex problems as appropriate.
- Perform maintenance, updates, and upgrades for servers, workstations/desktops, and business or specialized applications to ensure reliable operation, optimal performance, and alignment with operational needs.
- Administer and support Active Directory, including user account management, group memberships, Group Policy, Group Policy Preferences, and access control management.
- Administer and support databases, web services, and application services, including end-user support as needed.
- Deploy, administer, and maintain security tools and solutions, including planning and executing rollouts in accordance with established standards and procedures.
- Monitor system performance, availability, and health, proactively identifying and resolving issues to minimize service disruptions.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, procedures, and system inventories.
- Participate in and support infrastructure projects, technology initiatives, and evolving departmental IT requirements.
- Provide technical guidance and knowledge sharing to team members as appropriate.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support departmental and organizational objectives.

Responsibilities
Information Systems EngineerDesign, develop, maintain, and support technical infrastructure that includes network, hardware, database and/or system software components. Conduct analysis of business problems and lead the evaluation, development, and recommendation of specific technology products and platforms to provide cost-effective solutions that meet business and technology requirements. Research and design best fit infrastructure, network, database, and/or security architectures. Guide configuration, debugging, and support for infrastructure and ensure all quality and change control standards are met. Assist with root cause investigations and provide recommendations for preventative measures. Proactively address gaps with existing support processes, documentation, etc. and prioritize accordingly.
Information Systems Engineer, IIRequires moderate skill set and proficiency in discipline. Conducts work assignments of increasing complexity, under moderate supervision with some latitude for independent judgment.
Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 4 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience.
This is a Developing-Level position in the General Professional track.
Information Systems Engineer, IIIConsidered highly skilled and proficient in discipline. Conducts complex, important work under minimal supervision and with wide latitude for independent judgment.
Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 6 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 4 years of directly related work experience.
This is a Career-Level position in the General Professional track.
Information Systems Engineer, IVRecognized as subject matter expert and advanced individual contributor professional. Requires specialized skill set. Conducts highly complex work, unsupervised and with extensive latitude for independent judgment.
Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 8 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 6 years of directly related work experience.
This is an Advanced-Level position in the General Professional track.
Minimum Qualifications
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels:
Information Systems Engineer, II: Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 4 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 2 years of directly related work experience.
Information Systems Engineer, III: Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 6 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 4 years of directly related work experience.
Information Systems Engineer, IV: Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 8 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 6 years of directly related work experience.
Preferences
- Experience with Microsoft Windows Server and desktop operating systems.
- Working knowledge of Windows server infrastructure, including Active Directory, DNS, Group Policy, TCP/IP, SMTP, and general networking concepts.
- Experience with virtualization technologies and platforms such as VMware, Hyper-V, and Remote Desktop Services.
- Experience supporting and managing data center hardware, including servers, storage systems, networking equipment, and hardware lifecycle management.
- Experience with AWS and other cloud platforms.
- Knowledge of database concepts, administration, and management, including MSSQL, PostgreSQL, MySQL, SSIS, SSRS, and SSAS.
- Experience administering and supporting web servers and technologies such as IIS, Apache, and Tomcat.
- Experience deploying, administering, and supporting web applications and application platforms, including Java and ASP.NET.
- Experience working in Linux environments.
- Experience with enterprise backup and recovery solutions such as Veeam, Backup Exec, or similar products.
- Familiarity with ticketing, documentation, and collaboration tools such as Jira and Confluence.
- Experience with scripting, automation, and infrastructure automation technologies such as PowerShell, Jenkins, GitLab, Terraform, and CloudFormation.
- Experience with SharePoint administration and support.
- Relevant certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, Microsoft, VMware, MCSE, CCNA, ITIL, or related certifications are a plus.
