Job Description:
Instrument Maintenance Technician Position DescriptionThe University of North Carolina at Pembroke seeks an Instrument Maintenance Technician to support the instructional and research missions of the Biology and Chemistry/Physics departments. This position is responsible for maintaining, calibrating, troubleshooting, and repairing scientific instrumentation used in teaching laboratories, undergraduate research, and faculty scholarship.Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Perform preventive maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and minor repairs on laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
Maintain service records, calibration logs, and equipment inventories.
Coordinate manufacturer service calls, warranties, and vendor support when necessary.
Assist with installation, setup, and validation of new instrumentation.
Train faculty, staff, and students on proper equipment operation and safety procedures.
Support instructional laboratories and faculty research by ensuring equipment readiness and reliability.
Recommend equipment maintenance, replacement, and upgrade priorities.

Equipment SupportedExamples of equipment include:

Microscopes
Centrifuges
PCR systems
Autoclaves
Imaging and digital documentation systems (e.g., gel documentation systems)
Water purification systems
Analytical balances
UV-Visible spectrophotometers
Infrared spectrometers
Gas chromatographs (GC)
High-performance liquid chromatographs (HPLC)
Pipettes and other precision laboratory instruments

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering Technology, Instrumentation Technology, Electronics Technology, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience maintaining, calibrating, troubleshooting, or repairing scientific, technical, or laboratory equipment.
Knowledge of laboratory safety practices.
Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a scientific or technical field.
Experience working with analytical or research instrumentation in higher education, industry, or laboratory environments.
Experience providing technical support and training to users of scientific equipment.
