Merced College is home to seven women's and seven men's athletic teams, with a long-standing tradition of athletic excellence. The Athletic Trainer will support our two full-time athletic trainers in providing care for more than 300 student-athletes throughout their competitive seasons and off-seasons. This position helps ensure comprehensive coverage by filling scheduling gaps when our full-time staff are unavailable, including evenings and weekends. The role is essential to providing the level of athletic training support our student-athletes need to perform safely and successfully.

Classified Exempt Range 119 hours/week12 months/year
General Description:
This is an exempt position. The incumbent will, under direction, administer preventive and rehabilitative treatment to athletes engaged in intercollegiate sports

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions:
  • Accompanies teams on trips and attends home games in order to provide first aid or treatment for injuries
  • Carries out physicians' orders in administering light, heat, and other physical therapy treatments
  • Operates related therapy equipment
  • Tapes athletes before games and practice sessions to give extra support or prevent injury
  • Develops and implements conditioning and rehabilitating programs
  • Diagnoses and recommends treatment for physical weaknesses
  • Advises physical education faculty in selection and use of protective athletic equipment
  • Instructs others in the use of therapeutic devices and equipment
  • Gives first aid to athletes
  • Sends injured athletes to physician, if necessary
  • Prepares injury and treatment reports
  • Maintains records on all athletic injuries
  • Checks athletic uniforms and equipment to ensure proper fit
  • Prepares accident and insurance forms
  • Assists in budget development, preparation, and control
  • Trains and oversees the work of subordinates and student assistants
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Knowledge of:
  • Symptoms of various athletic injuries and applicable treatment and first aid methods
  • Knowledge of and ability to tape all areas to the body; ability to make slings and splints; ability to maintain records and prepare reports

Ability to:
  • Administer various types of physical therapy treatment utilizing massage, exercise, and equipment employing properties of heat, water, sound, and electricity
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others
  • Promote and incorporate culturally affirming DEIA and anti-racist principles to nurture and create a respectful, inclusive, and equitable learning and work environment. In conducting their duties, staff members shall respect and acknowledge the diversity of students and colleagues.


Typical Qualifications


REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education/Training/Experience
  • Bachelor's degree AND three (3) years of applicable experience OR
  • The equivalent education and experience
  • Certification by the National Athletic Trainer's Association and two years' of experience as a trainer
  • Possession of valid, up-to-date, Advanced Red Cross First Aid Certificate, a CPR card, and an appropriate California driver's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles
  • Promote and incorporate culturally affirming DEIA and anti-racist principles to nurture and create a respectful, inclusive, and equitable learning and work environment. In conducting their duties, staff members shall respect and acknowledge the diversity of students and colleagues.

Interview Information:

Applicants deemed highly qualified for the position will be invited to participate in onsite oral interviews conducted by a screening committee. A limited number of candidates will be selected to move forward to the interview stage.
Interviews are tentatively scheduled for mid to late-July.
