Job Summary:

The Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is hiring a Research Services Laboratory Entry Professional to support an active program of human deep brain stimulation (DBS) and intracranial electrophysiology research. This is an excellent opportunity for a candidate planning to pursue graduate study or a clinical research career in neuroscience, neurology, neurosurgery, biomedical engineering, or a related field. The position offers direct exposure to intraoperative neural recordings, advanced neuromodulation studies in collaboration with industry partners, and the day-to-day operations of a clinically integrated research program.

The Research Services Laboratory Entry Professional will work closely with the Principal Investigator, neurosurgery and neurology clinical teams, and laboratory staff to coordinate participant visits, support intraoperative and outpatient data collection, manage regulatory documentation, and assist with analysis of neural recordings in MATLAB. The position is well suited to a candidate with prior clinical research exposure who wants to develop deeper technical skills in human neurophysiology.

The selected candidate will:

Key Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate human subjects research studies in DBS and intracranial electrophysiology, including recruitment, scheduling, and informed consent.
  • Support intraoperative and outpatient neurophysiology data collection, including equipment setup, monitoring, and secure data transfer.
  • Prepare and maintain IRB submissions, amendments, continuing reviews, and regulatory documentation in audit-ready condition.
  • Perform data analysis tasks in MATLAB under PI direction, including quality control, established analysis pipelines, and figure preparation.
  • Maintain study source documents and REDCap data, and respond to queries from sponsors, monitors, and collaborators.
  • Coordinate with neurosurgery, neurology, and OR scheduling teams to integrate research activities with clinical care.
  • Contribute to scientific manuscripts, abstracts, posters, and grant materials. Collaborate with and support Principal Investigator (PI) and lab members with laboratory and research functions
  • Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects
  • Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze research
  • Maintenance of a laboratory inventory. Ordering and restocking reagents for the laboratory.
  • Molecular cloning
  • Molecular and histological analysis of mouse tissues, including genomic DNA isolation, PCR, RNA isolation, gene expression analysis by qPCR and NGS sequencing, protein localization or quantification by immunofluorescence analysis, Western blotting, or ELISA assay.
  • In vitro knockdown experiments using siRNA followed by quantitative analysis of gene expression.
  • Assist in the review and implementation of lab support policies, practices and programs to meet organizational, operations and management needs
  • Assist with ensuring compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations; receive guidance and direction or escalate when required

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field


Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, public health, psychology, or a related scientific field from an accredited institution.
  • Two or more years of prior clinical research coordination experience, including IRB submissions, informed consent, and human subjects data collection.
  • Prior experience in an academic medical center, neurosurgery or neurology research environment, or with deep brain stimulation or other neuromodulation studies.
  • Experience with MATLAB for scientific data analysis, including organization of structured datasets and generation of publication-quality figures.
  • Experience with REDCap, electronic regulatory systems, and standard clinical research documentation practices (ICH GCP).


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of federal regulations governing human subjects research (45 CFR 46, 21 CFR 50/56), HIPAA, and Good Clinical Practice principles.
  • Ability to handle confidential information, including protected health information, with discretion and in compliance with institutional policy.
  • Skill in organizing and maintaining structured research data, including version control, file naming, and documentation of analysis procedures.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary clinical and research team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, reference managers, REDCap, and an aptitude for learning new scientific and regulatory software tools.
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques
  • Knowledge of human stem cell research techniques


Conditions of Employment:
  • Must complete and maintain CITI human subjects research, HIPAA, ICH Good Clinical Practice, and blood-borne pathogens training as required by the institution and study sponsors.
  • Requires periodic presence in operating room and clinic environments and may involve occasional early-morning or extended hours to accommodate clinical research schedules.
  • Continuation of the position is contingent on grant and departmental funding.

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $49,899-$66,865
