Job Description:
The Director, Office of Academic Support oversees the full range of academic and disability support services at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University (the Medical School). These services include but are not limited to tutoring, disability resources, academic coaching, learning skills development, and one-on-one academic support. The duties of the Director include direct oversight and leadership in the design, implementation, and assessment of comprehensive programs and services that support the academic success of close to 600 medical students; leading the academic support team; supervising academic support staff; as well as providing consultations to students to improve academic skills. The Office of Academic Support Services is part of the Office of Medical School Student Affairs and the Director reports to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs at the Medical School. The Office of Student Affairs supports medical students in their development throughout medical school, in part by fostering an open, caring, and inclusive learning environment and serving as a responsive resource for students.
The Director, Office of Academic Support plays an integral role in the development of appropriate academic skills of students in the Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) approximately 220 students enrolled), students in Masters' Degree Programs that fall under the Medical School umbrella (for example, the Gateways in Medicine program (enrollment approximately 40 students), and those at The Warren Alpert Medical School (the Medical School) by working with students individually to develop improved study and time management skills as well as test-taking strategies throughout their medical education. In addition, the Director coordinates referrals to neuropsychological testing, provides training to tutors and the Accessibility and Learning Specialist and attends various meetings with medical school administrators. The Director provides input on the development and update of medical school policies as indicated.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
- Master's degree in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, Special Ed or similar program.
- Doctorate preferred.
- Counseling coursework preferred.
- 5-7 years of experience in the field of academic support services and working with students with disabilities, preferably in a college setting or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Formal training and education in disabilities services
- Knowledge of ADA and of various learning disabilities
- Knowledge of research supported study and learning skills
- Previous staff supervisory experience
Job Competencies
- Excellent communication skills
- Thorough understanding of varied neuropsychological tests and their meaning
- Previous experience in similar role preferred
- High degree of discretion
