Job Summary

The Medical College of Georgia is commencing a national search for Director of the Georgia Cancer Center at Augusta University. With a newly expanded facility that bridges research and clinical missions, the University is committed to growth and seeks a renowned physician or scientist to lead the progress towards NCI designation. This collaborative leader will report to the Dean of the Medical College and will be responsible for all educational, clinical, and research missions of the Center. Guided by the Center's Care Family Model, the Director will lead efforts in building cross-disciplinary research programs, developing cancer faculty, and establishing a regional foothold for oncologic services. This visionary leader will cultivate relationships locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally.

The Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University (AU), is the only public medical school in Georgia, the 13th oldest and the 4th largest medical school in the U.S. with 3 regional campuses and a partnership campus with the University of Georgia. AU is one of four research-intensive universities in the University System of Georgia. With 920 medical students, 510 residents, and over 800 faculty members, MCG has a long-established tradition of excellence in education, research, and clinical care.

Responsibilities

Leadership:

Articulate an inspiring and coherent vision for the Cancer Center while remaining committed to professional and leadership development, recruitment and retention, and mentoring of colleagues.
Increase the footprint of the cancer center locally, nationally, and internationally in outstanding patient-centered care, clinical-translational research, and community outreach.
Use high emotional intelligence, collaboration, and consensus building to develop strong partnerships within the University, Augusta community, and across the state.
Proven ability to guide teams, based on compelling vision and fact-based analysis across multiple dimensions.
Possesses strategic and tactical/operational focus.
Effective relationship building skills and respectful of others; collegial; principled, and of the highest personal and professional integrity.

Management:

Proven leadership and administrative experience within an NCI-designated cancer center. Experience in the management of a clinical enterprise and understanding of the complexities involved.
Knowledgeable in human resource management and advocate for compliance with institutional and external regulations.
Skilled at organizing and managing human resources, including resolving conflict.
Understands and passionately advocates compliance with institutional and external regulations.
Ability to delegate effectively while maintaining focus on academic matters and overall goals of the institution.

Philanthropy:

Partner with the Office of Advancement to raise private philanthropic funds in support of the research, patient care, and community engagement missions of GCC.
Represent the Center on donor visits and solicitations and in the community at third party and grassroots fundraisers.
Build a culture of philanthropy and charge the Center's faculty, staff, and physicians to develop partnerships in pursuit of further philanthropic investment.

External Activities:

Experience working with leadership of hospitals, faculty practice organizations, research enterprise, and/or other critical institutions as appropriate.
Demonstrate, or exhibit the ability to build productive relationships with alumni, donors, government leaders, and related stakeholders.
Demonstrate leadership in community-engagement activities, to include facilitating outreach to minority populations in rural and underserved areas for greater access and provision of state-of-the art care across the cancer continuum.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D., Ph.D./M.D., or M.D. from an accredited college or university.
Minimum of 10 years of proven experience in clinical research operations, including leadership roles within academic or large community cancer centers.
Deep understanding of regulatory requirements, clinical trial design, and data management.
Demonstrated strength in leadership, strategic planning, communication, and relationship management.

Outstanding academic record with experience in leadership and senior administration in an NCI-designated Cancer Center
The ability to represent the Cancer Center effectively; to build strong relationships with internal and external constituents, to be an effective advocate for the Cancer Center and the advancement of the profession.
A high level of integrity and professionalism, and a commitment to support the professional development of faculty and staff.
Demonstrated ability to build a sense of community and to actively engage faculty, staff, students, and alumni in support of a shared strategic vision.
Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills; the ability to listen attentively to varied perspectives and foster a supportive and collaborative working environment.

The Medical College of Georgia (MCG) is one of the nation's largest medical schools by class size, with 304 students per class. The MCG educational experience is anchored by the main campus in Augusta, with regional clinical campuses for third- and fourth-year students across the state, and two four-year campuses located in Athens (in partnership with the University of Georgia) and in Savannah (in partnership with Georgia Southern University).
