Assistant/Associate Professor of Ophthalmology, Clinician Educator (CE) Track

Location: Philadelphia
Open Date: Jan 29, 2026
Deadline:

The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine, Ophthalmology Service invites qualified individuals to apply for an open faculty position in the Clinician Educator (CE) track in Small Animal Ophthalmology at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Applications are currently being accepted, and the start date is negotiable.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and maintaining the excellence of Penn Vet's ophthalmology programs in medicine, surgery, education, research, and service. The candidate will be responsible for didactic, laboratory and clinical teaching of veterinary medical students, participation in patient care, and supervision of residents. A key requirement of the Clinician Educator track is development of a scholarly research program that advances the field of ophthalmology through the discovery and dissemination of new knowledge. The proximity of Penn Vet to the wider University biomedical community fosters numerous collaborative research and clinical endeavors. The Department offers junior rank faculty mentoring through a specifically appointed mentoring committee as well as competitive internal funding for pilot research projects. Clinician Educators are members of the standing faculty who spend 29 weeks of their annual effort in clinical and teaching endeavors, with the balance of their efforts devoted to research and other scholarly pursuits. Clinician Educators perform the majority of the Department's clinical research, and the strongest candidates will have a history of or potential for generation of new knowledge. This position is part of the School's Standing Faculty. It is a non-tenured position, with reappointment every three years and promotion required by year nine.

In addition to working in a dynamic hospital setting with excellent support staff, the advantages of the position include an exciting intellectual environment with outstanding residents and faculty. The candidate will join a thriving ophthalmology service with a team of four American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ACVO) and European College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ECVO) diplomates, two talented American Board of Veterinary Ophthalmology residents, one specialty intern, one dedicated certified veterinary nurse, and one nursing assistant. The service is equipped with standard phacoemulsification equipment, an Iridex diode laser, ERG machine, a Heidelberg Spectralis OCT, and has access to advanced imaging modalities such as CT and MRI, as well as radiation therapy. The service boasts a robust and diverse caseload and serves as a referral center for the Greater Philadelphia area. After-hours responsibilities include shared backup support for residents and the specialty intern on call.

Adjacent to the veterinary hospital are three world-class biomedical hospitals and research centers, which provide excellent opportunities for collaboration: The Perelman School of Medicine, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and the Wistar Institute (https://www.upenn.edu/life-at-penn).

The University provides a comprehensive and competitive benefits package, which includes multiple options for retirement savings and tuition benefits for the candidate's spouse or dependent children. This is an outstanding opportunity for an individual who enjoys working in a vibrant urban environment with an abundance of cultural resources, including music, art, theatres, and fine dining (www.upenn.edu/life-at-penn/philadelphia). Philadelphia offers easy access to New York and Washington DC. Additionally, Wissahickon Valley Park, Valley Forge National Park, and many more recreational amenities are within minutes of the city.

Qualifications
Candidates must have a veterinary degree and be board-certified by the ACVO or ECVO or successfully completed an accredited ACVO/ECVO residency and are preparing for board-certification. Salary will be commensurate with professional and academic credentials and experience.
