The Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University, we provide dental education to the next generation of professionals by offering hands-on education through innovative research, patient care, and service. Join other dental providers to improve the oral health of Georgia and beyond. The DCG was founded to provide the people of Georgia with quality dental care by educating students in dentistry. As a patient, you have the option to receive treatment in one of our three different practice models consisting of student clinics, resident care, or in the faculty practice. All dental treatments can be completed by the specialists in our facility. We also serve patients in more than 20 clinics across Georgia.
Job Summary
This position provides clinical administrative and supervisory support to a designated dental team, including oversight of daily operations and direct supervision of dental assistants. Responsibilities include assigning and monitoring work, managing staff schedules, assisting in hiring and performance evaluations, and ensuring adherence to departmental policies and procedures. The role supports students, residents, and faculty with clinical and pre-clinical activities by managing the supply, maintenance, and minor repair of dental instruments, equipment, and materials. The position also involves chairside assistance during specialized dental procedures, including those requiring IV sedation. The individual serves as a liaison among patients, staff, students, and faculty and is required to support ADEX (CRDTS) exams, mock boards, and other board certification activities, occasionally including weekend work (approximately four to six times annually).
Responsibilities
The duties include, but are not limited to:
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervises clinical dental assisting employees assigned to the designated team. Responsibilities include recruitment, hiring, orientation, and training of new staff. Conducts performance evaluations and provides ongoing coaching to ensure employee performance meets established standards. Administers corrective actions or disciplinary measures as necessary. Maintains oversight of employee schedules, ensuring appropriate coverage and accountability. Provides assistance across departmental areas as needed to support efficient clinical operations and the delivery of high-quality dental care.
CLINICAL ASSIGNMENT COORDINATION AND CHAIRSIDE SUPPORT: Coordinates daily assignments of dental assistants to ensure efficient clinical operations and timely completion of required duties. Ensures all dental assistants are cross-trained and able to perform effectively across all relevant areas of dentistry within the assigned clinics. Provides direct chairside assistance to providers during examinations and procedures, including but not limited to restorative, crown, bridge, and surgical treatments. Performs radiographs and provides patients with appropriate post-treatment and home care instructions.
COMMUNICATION AND COMPLIANCE OVERSIGHT: Facilitates effective communication among dental assistants regarding procedural updates, policy changes, clinical clarifications, and distribution of essential materials. Ensures proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with safety standards. Oversees cleanliness and sterilization of equipment, instruments, and operatories to maintain compliance with Infection Control protocols and OSHA regulations. Upholds the confidentiality of patient information and ensures adherence to all Augusta University (AU) and Dental College of Georgia (DCG) policies, including HIPAA.
CLINICAL SUPPLY MANAGEMENT: Ensures dental clinics are adequately stocked and equipped with the disposable materials and medications required for daily operations. Maintains clean and orderly clinical environments and monitors supply levels to prevent shortages, placing timely orders as needed. Oversees inventory and ordering of non-stocked supplies, dental instruments, and specialty equipment required for assigned clinics to support uninterrupted clinical operations.
EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE AND OVERSIGHT: Manages inventory of equipment and supplies for both clinics and laboratories. Conducts regular equipment inspections to ensure proper functionality and coordinates the transfer of damaged items to ICR for service, ensuring all transactions are accurately documented in the system. Oversee the basic maintenance of clinic equipment, perform minor repairs, and submit necessary documentation for service or replacement: tracks repair completion and equipment turn-ins to maintain continuity of care and operational efficiency.
DEPARTMENTAL AND OFF-CAMPUS SUPPORT:
Provides dental assisting support to other departments and off-campus sites where Augusta University (AU) and the Dental College of Georgia (DCG) deliver educational or clinical services. May be required to travel using personal transportation, with mileage reimbursed at the prevailing AU rate, to ensure continuity of care and support across institutional locations as needed.
IV SEDATION: Assist with IV sedation
Board Certification and Pre-Clinical Support: Supports ADEX (CRDTS), mock boards, and other board certification exercises throughout the year, including potential weekend assignments. Assists with coordination efforts, including nominating and monitoring participating staff. Prepares, distributes, and collects supplemental instruments used for board exams. Provides support to participants by ensuring access to necessary patient care supplies and equipment. Also assists with the fabrication of select materials for use in pre-clinical courses, contributing to the overall success of clinical education programs.
OTHER: Perform other duties as assigned by DCG Operations management.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with two years of experience in dentistry
OR
Certified Dental Assistant and/or Associate degree from an accredited college or university with three years of experience in dentistry
OR
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent from a recognized state or federal accrediting organization with four years of related experience
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience supervising dental staff
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a focus on dental or health-related studies
Graduation from a Certified Dental Assisting program, Current CPR certification, Intraoral Radiographic Certification and training in radiological safety
Two or more years of experience as a dental assistant in a general dentistry or multi-specialty practice
Proficiency in spoken Spanish in a clinical setting
Certification as a Dental Surgical Anesthesia Assistant or the ability to obtain this certification within the first year of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
KNOWLEDGE
Comprehensive understanding of dental terminology, procedures, and infection control protocols.
Familiarity with chairside assisting in general dentistry and various dental specialties
Knowledge of oral and tooth anatomy, including bony structures of the face, to support diagnostic-quality radiograph acquisition.
Working knowledge of dental instruments and materials, including the ability to assess serviceability and anticipate replacement needs.
Basic knowledge of radiographic techniques and radiation safety protocols
Awareness of HIPAA regulations and patient confidentiality standards.
Understanding of dental charting systems, electronic health records (EHR), and basic dental lab assisting procedures and practices.
SKILLS
Proficient in four-handed dentistry and the use of suction, retraction, and isolation techniques.
Skilled in taking and processing dental radiographs in accordance with diagnostic and safety standards.
Capable of preparing a variety of dental materials (e.g., amalgam, impression materials, cements).
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently, maintain clean and organized operatories, and work effectively.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills for working with a diverse population of patients, students, faculty, and staff.
