The Department of Neurosurgery in the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University is recruiting for an Assistant Research Scientist, research faculty position that conducts complex technical research, designing and executing experiments, analyzing data, and interpreting results to advance basic or translational science under a Principal Investigator (PI). The purpose of this Assistant Research Scientist position is to have a scientist with medical knowledge and scientific research experience to conduct research on both human samples and mouse models. The personnel would also be responsible for general lab managing, including purchasing materials, and ensuring all safety protocols are updated. The scientist would be required to conduct independent research, preparing manuscripts and research grants. Lastly, the scientist will assist the Pl and the other scientist in the lab for collaborative research and student mentoring. This position does not meet the requirements to be on a tenure track.
Responsibilities
Core Research Responsibilities
- Design, conduct, and support basic, translational, or clinical research studies in accordance with approved protocols
- Perform experiments and data collection using established and emerging research methodologies
- Analyze and interpret research data using appropriate statistical and analytical tools
- Maintain accurate, complete, and timely research records (e.g., lab notebooks, databases, regulatory files)
- Troubleshoot experimental procedures and contribute to method development and optimization
Regulatory, Compliance, and Ethical Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations (e.g., IRB, IACUC, HIPAA, biosafety)
- Prepare, submit, and maintain regulatory documents and protocol amendments
- Follow Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and research integrity standards
- Participate in required compliance training and audits
Grant and Funding Support
- Assist with preparation of grant proposals, progress reports, and renewals
- Track research milestones and deliverables associated with funded projects
- Contribute to budget justifications and resource planning related to research activities
Publications and Scholarly Activity
- Contribute to manuscript preparation, figures, and supplementary materials
- Assist with abstracts, posters, and oral presentations for scientific meetings
- Stay current with relevant scientific literature and integrate findings into ongoing research
Collaboration and Communication
- Collaborate with principal investigators, faculty, trainees, and interdisciplinary research teams
- Communicate research progress, challenges, and findings in meetings and written reports
- Coordinate with core facilities, collaborators, and external partners as needed
Mentorship and Training
- Train and supervise students, residents, fellows, or research staff in laboratory or research procedures
- Provide guidance on experimental techniques, data integrity, and safety practices
- Support a positive, respectful, and inclusive research environment
Laboratory / Research Operations
- Manage day-to-day research operations, including scheduling experiments and coordinating resources
- Maintain laboratory equipment and arrange calibration, maintenance, or repairs
- Oversee inventory, ordering, and proper storage of research materials and supplies
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols and proper waste disposal
Administrative and Institutional Responsibilities
- Participate in departmental meetings and research seminars
- Assist with documentation required for institutional reporting and accreditation
- Perform other research-related duties as assigned in support of departmental goals

PhD or equivalent.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
This position is fiscal year based and works year-round. Amount of time worked is based on work commitment.
The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is between 0.75 and 0.99 FTE. The FTE will be determined at the time of hire after discussions during the interview process with the successful candidate. Although this position is fully benefits eligible and can select from the robust University System of Georgia (USG) benefits package, this position is not considered full-time. Only positions at 1.0 FTE are considered full-time.
Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.

The Medical College of Georgia (MCG) is one of the nation's largest medical schools by class size, with 304 students per class.
