Job Summary:

The mission of the COMPASS Program is to guide medical students through their transformation into physicians, deepen their understanding of how physicians engage with the world, and support their journey toward reaching their full potential. To foster both professional and personal development, each student in the Trek curriculum is paired with a faculty COMPASS Guide for all four (or more) years of medical school.



COMPASS Guides serve as longitudinal coaches for student development and as dedicated educators within the Trek curriculum. Each COMPASS Guide works with approximately 10-20 students, typically onboarding 10 new students every other year. As core faculty in the Trek Curriculum and primary faculty within the COMPASS Program, Guides leverage their clinician-educator expertise to teach students critical skills such as coaching, self-reflection, professional identity formation, effective use of feedback, self-directed learning, and fostering a growth mindset. Guides join a vibrant community of educators from diverse specialties and clinical sites, and we encourage faculty from all backgrounds and disciplines to apply.



COMPASS Support Guides play an essential role in providing both short-term and long-term coverage as part of the educator-on-call backup system. They step in when a full-time COMPASS Guide takes leave or exits the program, ensuring continuity of faculty support for student groups. Regular responsibilities include teaching one to two Wednesday afternoons per month and participating in the educator-on-call backup system. If a longer-term commitment is required for longitudinal coaching coverage, additional responsibilities and compensation will be discussed.



Posting for two-three (2-3) COMPASS Guides and (1) Support Guide.

This position will report to the Director of the COMPASS Program.

This position has no direct supervision



Examples of Work Performed (activities and breakdown may differ between Guide role and Support Guide roles):



30% - Coaching:

Meet with each student one-on-one approximately 5 times per year to review progress and create learning goals

Meet with students as needed for additional coaching or counseling

Address immediate student issues, including off hours concerns in emergent situations in conjunction with the Office of Student Life (OSL)

Document all meetings with students

Maintain close communication with the Office of Student Life around students concerns; utilizing OSL and appropriate campus referral sources as needed

Write letters of recommendation for curricular, post-graduate, and extra-curricular opportunities

Work with the Office of Student Life in crafting the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) for students applying to residency positions

Support students in their application for residency and provide academic/career advising



30% - Teaching:

During years that your students are 1st and 3rd year students:

• Facilitate small group sessions related to Professional Identity Formation (anticipate 5 sessions per year)
• Facilitates small group sessions relate to Health and Society (anticipate 5 sessions per year).
• Serve as a substitute (back-up) facilitator for COMPASS small group sessions for first year student COMPASS groups
• Facilitate small group sessions during the Advanced Science Courses
  
  
  

During years that your students are 2nd and 4th year students:

• Facilitate small group sessions related to Professional Identity Formation (anticipate 5 sessions per year)
• Facilitates small group sessions relate to Health and Society (anticipate 5 sessions per year).
• Serve as a substitute (back-up) facilitator for COMPASS small group sessions for first year student COMPASS groups
• Facilitate small group sessions during the Advanced Science Courses
• Facilitate small groups sessions during Basecamp weeks
• Facilitate career-advising sessions designed to prepare students for residency applications.

20% - Assessment:

Participate in grading notes and oral presentations for the Clinical Performance Exam (Standardized Patient exam) that occurs after the core clinical year

Participate in grading notes and oral presentations that students complete as part of the work during the Longitudinal Integrated Clerkships



5% - Trek Progress Committee:

Attend Trek Progress Committee meetings (approximately 1 per month, scheduled during faculty development sessions on Wednesday). The Trek Progress Committee oversees student progress through the curriculum

For students they coach, the guide would be responsible for summarizing the student's progress but would not vote

For students they don't coach, the guide would be a voting member of the committee reviewing the student's progress and determining readiness to advance

Participate in devising and implementing remediation plans for students they don't coach



5%-Community building:

Attend 1st year student orientation, expected one full day commitment and one half-day commitment

Attend college social events three times per year

Mentor 4th year Student Leaders (Navigators) around planning/executing individual events

Attend three planning sessions with 4th year student leaders (one per semester) to develop goals for the college



10% - Required Faculty Development:

Attend required Faculty Development sessions in advance of Trek curriculum launch to prepare for teaching Health and Society Small groups

Attend faculty development sessions and Guide check-ins 2x per month

Attend COMPASS retreat for 1 day/year

Attend individual faculty development sessions for all sessions the guides facilitate

Faculty will be evaluated annually with input from the Office of Student Life, Office of Assessment, Evaluation, and Outcomes, senior student leaders, and students in the college. Each Guide will meet yearly with the COMPASS Program Director to review their performance

Meet with the COMPASS coordinator annually to set up data collection instruments and processes and work with the Office of Evaluation to insure a comprehensive evaluation of college activities

Work Location:

Hybrid - this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule with select days per week, including Wednesday, on campus and as needed for in-person sessions/meetings. The position's on-site location will be in Aurora, CO.

M.D. or D.O. Degree or equivalent with a concentration in healthcare and education and medical licensure in the State of Colorado.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred Start Date: July 1,2025

Prior medical student teaching experience at any institution for two years or more.

Prior experience with coaching or mentoring.

Demonstrated interest in medical student education, including small group facilitation.

Demonstrated interest in health systems science.

Demonstrated commitment to lifelong learning, a growth mindset, and a reflective humanistic approach to working with learners and colleagues



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Program management and coordination skills.

Ability to communicate and collaborate with students, faculty, and leadership team members.

Organizational skills and attention to detail are important.

The individual in this position needs to be a person who can cultivate relationships with both university and community physicians, as well as students, and be available to answer questions and problem-solve as needed.

The individual must enjoy working with students, providing advice on how to troubleshoot/resolve issues, and assisting students to ensure their success.
