Job Summary

The Residential Community Coordinator position is a 12-month, full-time, live-in, professional staff position within the Office of Residence Life and the Student Affairs Division at the University of Utah.

Reporting to an Assistant Director of Residence Life, the Residential Community Coordinator has immediate supervision of Community Advisors, student staff positions. The Residential Community Coordinator is charged with being the direct contact for concerns surrounding on-call response of Community Advisors and safety within the halls.

Responsibilities
Supervision
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate student staff.
  • Meet regularly with supervisors on an individual and group basis, while directly overseeing student staff meetings and functions.
  • Provide training and ongoing professional development for staff.



Administrative Tasks
  • Direct day-to-day operations of Community Advisors and safety initiatives.
  • Lead residential community and/or functional areas to meet experiential goals, as outlined in the Resident Experience Model (REM).
  • Assist in the development and proper interpretation of policies and procedures among staff and students.
  • Serve as a liaison to campus partners, including but not limited to: Office of the Dean of Students', Housing & Dining Programs, and other key partners.
  • Maintain an area budget and approve staff expenditures in accordance with purchasing guidelines.
  • Work to advance the University, Division of Student Affairs, and ORLs strategic plan through participation in goal setting, program implementation, committee/task force work and assessment efforts.

Emergency and Crisis Response
  • Take part in a 24/7 on-call duty rotation along with all on-call staff.
  • Respond to emergency situations and assist in resolving resident and facilities concerns and needs.
  • Serve as a liaison with the University Police Department, Dean of Students, Mental Health First Aid, and Counseling Center.
  • Share responsibility in maintaining health, fire, and safety standards.
  • Serve as a Campus Security Authority for the University of Utah and assist in reporting incident information as needed.

Facilities Management
  • Work with the building teams (Custodial Crew Leader and Maintenance Mechanic) on the management of the facilities.
  • Identify areas of facilities that need upgrades.
  • Walk through building(s) on a regular basis for cleanliness and maintenance needs identification.

Student Accountability & Support
  • Respond and process alleged policy violations as reported by staff, students, University Police, or community members utilizing University of Utah Advocate package.
  • As needed, serve as a hearing officer for student accountability and student support cases as directed by members of the ORL leadership team and Office of the Dean of Students.
  • Maintain due process and a learning-centered philosophy when sanctioning and engaging in the accountability process.

Community Relations
  • Maintain close communication and positive relationships with residents, students, and professional staff.
  • Coordinate and represent the Office of Residence Life on committees, recruitment activities, or projects as assigned.
  • Establish a relationship and collaboration with the University of Utah Police Department/Safety for programming and training.

Availability
1
- The Residential Community Coordinator is a full-time, live-in staff member.
2 - The Residential Community Coordinator will keep regular office hours. Evening and weekend commitments will be required to fulfill duties of the position.
3 - While serving on-call, the Residential Community Coordinator will remain within close proximity to the University. Residential Community Coordinators are asked to serve on call during holidays, weekends, and evenings as needed to ensure 24/7 coverage. On-call responsibilities are split among staff members. 4 - Essential Personnel: This position is considered an essential personnel position for the department, and as such, must be accessible and available in the event of emergencies or when needed to meet the ongoing mission of the University

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
Four to six years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of hiring department's area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Master's degree in a related area may be preferred.

  • Master's Degree or Bachelor's Degree + 2 years of experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with students from all backgrounds, creating a welcoming living environment that supports student success and well-being.
  • Previous experience in supervision, administration, organization, and planning.
  • Demonstrated experience leading student staff teams.
  • Demonstrated experience with student accountability, crisis intervention, and emergency response.
  • Direct experience working in university housing.
