Salary Range: $50,700 - $65,419 annually. Compensation will be commensurate upon experience and qualifications.This position is Non-Exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) overtime provisions.

Summary

The UCCS Police Department is committed to protecting life, liberty, property, and the constitutional rights of all people through compassion, fairness, integrity, and professionalism. The Public Safety Communications Technician plays a vital role in supporting this mission by serving as a critical communications link between the university community and emergency responders. This position is responsible for receiving and prioritizing emergency and non-emergency calls, deploying appropriate services, and maintaining accurate and secure records in support of public safety operations.



Essential Functions

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
  • Answer and process all incoming emergency and non-emergency phone calls; interview callers to gather essential information and determine response level.
  • Dispatch appropriate services (police, fire, ambulance, rescue, facilities, security, parking, etc.) using a Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD) system.
  • Monitor and communicate via multi-channel police radio systems; relay instructions and status updates to field units in real time.
  • Track and document unit activity, incident status, personnel location and deployment using CAD.
  • Monitor various safety systems including:
    • Campus 911 notification system
    • Fire and intrusion alarm systems
    • Elevator safety and HVAC systems
    • Campus safety applications and emergency alert systems
  • Coordinate responses and communicate with other law enforcement agencies, university departments, external service providers, and mutual aid partners.
  • Retrieve, enter, audit, and secure sensitive information in local, state, and national criminal justice databases (e.g., NCIC, CCIC, CJIS).
  • Maintain proper documentation and security of confidential police and criminal justice records.
  • Conduct background checks for law enforcement use and ensure the lawful release of police records.
  • Perform administrative and clerical tasks including filing, data entry, record retrieval, and checking keys and equipment in and out.
  • Serve as a liaison to the campus community and external agencies, directing non-emergency requests to the appropriate department or service.
  • Assist in the instruction, counseling, and evaluation of new communications personnel using a structured training program.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must obtain the following certifications within designated timeframes after hire:
    • Within 3 months: NCIC/CCIC (National Crime Information Center/Colorado Crime Information Center)
    • Within 6 months: Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), FEMA IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and Notary Public
    • Within 1 year: APCO Public Safety Telecommunicator.
  • Experience in a public safety or emergency communications setting is preferred.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) is preferred.
  • Highly qualified applicants will have experience with:
    • Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS)
    • Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD)
    • National and state criminal databases (NCIC, CCIC)
