Position Announcement

Summary of Responsibilities

Instructs, manages, and supervises individual students and groups of students primarily in chemistry laboratories by the following methods: demonstration, discussion, visual aids, procedures, and projects. Teaches lower division lecture courses as assigned by the Chemistry Department Chair. Assists Lab Managers or course lecturers as assigned by the Chemistry Department Chair. Evaluates instruction and learning by means of written, oral, practical, and performance tests. Maintains a student-oriented, hands-on approach to education. Participates in assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation activities to improve the instructional quality in the chemistry laboratories and classroom.
Assists in recruitment, advisement, placement, and follow-up of students. Coordinates cooperative work experience programs and maintains desirable classroom and laboratory conditions. Establishes and maintains office hours and advises students during this time and at other times as needed.
Maintains and submits accurate and current reports and records involving student accountability, attendance, performance, and outcomes.

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in chemistry or a closely related area.

Preferred Qualifications

Masters degree in Chemistry or a related field required.
Ph.D. Preferred.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Knowledge of laboratory protocols, procedures, and practices within the relevant field of study.
Knowledge of safety standards for the use of laboratory equipment, facilities, and supplies.
Knowledge of instructing laboratory materials receiving and storage procedures.
Knowledge of the use of Microsoft Excel to plot chemistry data and solve chemistry problems.
Skills in effective instructional strategies and techniques in chemistry.
Skills in providing guidance and instruction in laboratory protocols and in the safe use of laboratory equipment.
Skills in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
Effective interpersonal, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
Ability to teach, manage, motivate, and evaluate students in a laboratory and/or classroom setting.
Ability to communicate information in an effective and clear manner easily understood by students.
Ability to maintain quality, safety, and hazardous material handling procedures in the laboratory.
