Job Summary


Planning Design & Construction (PD&C) at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Planner II! The mission of the Department is to guide campus planning, capital development, and non-capital improvements to buildings, open space, transportation and other related facilities through annual capital development requests, long range campus master planning, and the planning, design and construction of specific capital and non-capital projects.

This position plans changes to the Boulder campus by implementing elements of the Campus Master Plan and advancing more specific plans, designs, procedures and standards that relate to campus development projects, large and small. The position ensures a professional planning and design approach is taken on a wide variety of campus planning issues such as transportation, open space planning, space programming, building planning, and facility design; by providing professional planning services, and directing the analysis and preparation of feasibility studies, program plans and other documents.

The position works directly with campus departments to assess needs and develop planning and design solutions. The position acts as Owners Representative, overseeing the planning and design of capital construction projects, especially from inception through Design Development, and partners with a project manager during documentation and construction phases.

Who We Are


The PD&C department is responsible for the planning, design and construction of buildings on campus, in support of CU Boulder's academic mission. The department focuses on long-range planning and capital development functions of the organization as a balanced counterpart to the project-related functions of Campus Design & Construction. Department staff strive to guide campus development in a way that gives physical form to the university's mission, vision, and programs through the effective use of human, environmental, and financial resources.


What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be


Professional Planning Services
  • Both independently and with others, provide strategic space-focused planning and programming for campus departments by working with units to identify programmatic needs, performance requirements, and design criteria for spaces supporting both daily activities and strategic goals.
  • Draft, coordinate and review feasibility studies, program plans and other documents related to campus development that are used to define projects and validate project scope and budget to campus leadership, CU Board of Regents, and the state legislature.

Project and Design Management
  • Manage the planning and design phases of capital development projects, including outside consultant work. Partner with project managers to ensure program and design intent is maintained. Review construction documents and select shop drawings, submittals, and installed construction work to verify conformance with design intent and architectural standards.
  • Provide timely and accurate justification for advancement of capital project planning with supporting analysis, documentation and materials. Prepare material for Board of Regent action items and other entities.

Disseminating Information & Strategic Initiatives
  • Assist the Director of Planning with matters relating to community/University development projects, assembling and disseminating information about campus development plans for various boards, commissions, and development related groups.
  • Contribute to development of precinct plans and planning initiatives such as the Campus Master Plan, Energy Master Plan, Transportation Master Plan, and Housing Master Plan.
  • Aid in the preparation of capital budget materials. Coordinate with campus entities including leadership of Infrastructure & Resilience and Finance and CU System regarding Board of Regent, CCHE, legislative and other CU System and State of Colorado processes. Work with Planning Director on special projects as needed.

This position has the ability to work in a hybrid work format, and has an expected work schedule of Monday - Friday during regular business hours.

The salary range for this position is $78,100 - $90,000 annually.

What We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in architecture, environmental design, urban planning, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
  • Five years of work experience at a design firm as an architectural intern, interior designer, or planner, including work in architectural design, urban design and/or space needs analysis.


What You Will Need

  • Communication and presentation skills, including written, oral, and graphic.
  • Ability to arbitrate between competing interests of various parties.
  • Excellent conflict resolution skills.
