Job Summary

The University of Colorado Boulder is searching for an Irrigation Tech III/Lead Worker! This position will troubleshoot and repair all aspects of the irrigation system. This role will be involved with Ditch operation and maintenance, and also serves as the irrigation lead worker and assists with oversight of 3 positions, as well as student employees. This position may make data adjustments in the Lynx irrigation computer system.

Who We Are

Facilities Management (FM) provides outdoor services to general fund areas and to several auxiliary funded facilities. Facilities Management Outdoor Services is responsible for grounds maintenance and irrigation system operation and maintenance for the general fund areas on campus.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Irrigation, maintenance, and installation of campus irrigation system
  • Perform walk-throughs for inspection on the irrigation system to ensure accurate head performance and coverage. Read and interpret construction drawings, irrigation plans and as-builds. Troubleshoot and repair control wiring, main lines, lateral lines, electric valves, and sprinkler heads; determine the head type, head spacing, headcount, nozzle selection, and irrigation zones to help maintain or achieve accurate coverage, water pressure, and precipitation rates. Participate in coordinating and performing irrigation system blowout using a trailer-mounted commercial air compressor, monitoring air pressure and isolating mainline zones. Act as the contact person for contractors in the absence of the Irrigation Manager. Will serve as the work leader and assist with troubleshooting and repairs.
Maintain wireless radio communication systems for Lynx and handheld radios
  • Analyze, troubleshoot, repair and/or replace wireless radio communication components for Toro Lynx central control system including irrigation controllers, soil sensors, circuit boards, modems, UHF radios, handheld radios, antennas, cables, and wiring; through the use of a Rig Specialist, spectrum analyzer, and wattmeter.
  • Perform changes in Lynx irrigation computer system based on knowledge of how the system waters campus, and other variables including evapotranspiration rate, multiple precipitation rates, exposure, microclimate, slope, percent adjustments, and soil moisture levels.
Ditch maintenance
  • Monitor ditch water flows and make adjustments to the headgates as well as cleaning of debris at the headgates of 3 ditches to maintain proper flow for pond replenishment. Conduct chart recordings and digital meter readings to help with the accounting of amounts of water used through ditches and pump stations.
Snow and ice removal
  • Remove snow and ice from streets, parking lots, sidewalks and curbs. Apply sand/salt or Anti-icing chemical mixture using various equipment.
Maintain work vehicle
  • Schedule and request vehicle maintenance with campus motor pool to perform minor maintenance on Facilities Management vehicles and equipment, and coordinate with outdoor services mechanic for other equipment repairs. Maintain a constant supply of vehicle stock material for irrigation repairs as necessary.
Safety
  • Adhere to the safety guidelines and policies crafted by Human Resources, Facilities management safety committee, the Outdoor services safety group, and industry-standard methodologies.
  • Complete additional miscellaneous grounds duties when needed. Examples include branch pick up after storms, grounds support for graduation including running a blower, placing mulch in beds, running a string trimmer, etc.
  • Being an essential services position, the employee may have to respond to, and/or coordinate with crew members who respond to, after hour's emergency issues related to snow/ice removal, pump station, irrigation mainline, sprinkler zones, ditches, Lynx irrigation computer, radio communication system, or other job-related situations.


What You Should Know

  • This position works five (5) eight-hour days per week, between the hours of 6:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, based on staffing requirements of the Department.
  • This role is eligible for our Facilities Management Employee Referral Program.


What We Can Offer

  • The annual base salary range for this position is $56,000 - $57,200.
  • This position is also eligible for on call pay in addition to the base salary mentioned above.
  • If you have prior state-classified experience in the same class series as this position, your pay may be set at a higher amount per the state Step Pay Program implemented on July 1, 2024.

What We Require

  • Three years of experience with grounds keeping or landscape maintenance or a related field. Appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Must have a valid Colorado driver's license and be a Colorado resident to apply.
  • Within the first 6 months, the employee must acquire and maintain a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) certification.
