Position Announcement
At Utah Valley University, the Locksmith plays a critical role in maintaining the security, accessibility, and functionality of campus facilities. This position offers the opportunity to work hands-on with a wide variety of mechanical locks and door hardware, including ADA-compliant systems, panic hardware, door closures, and locks on desks, cabinets, and display cases. Employees in this role contribute directly to campus safety and operational efficiency by managing key issuance, conducting audits, and supporting departments with lockbox management and hardware solutions.

Summary of Responsibilities
- Performs skilled locksmith work by installing, maintaining and repairing all different types of mechanical door hardware. Including desks, file cabinets, display cases, door closures, panic hardware and ADA openers; and making emergency repairs of locks as required under emergency conditions.
- Maintains Master Key Systems by keeping accurate records of hardware changes and new lock installations in each building, and repairing, maintaining, and reloading cylinders for locks in the master key system. Issues keys, returns keys and runs annual key audits for all employees. Coordinates with contractors and project managers to insure proper hardware and lock keying specifications on new constructions and remodel projects. Responsible for all new lock keying and re-keying projects. Manages the Key tracking software SimpleK. Coordinates with Human Resources and other departments in ensuring the proper removal of proximity access and recovery of university keys upon the termination of all employees.
- Answers emails and phone calls regarding all key and lock issues. Manages part time employees as needed. Assigns work orders and closes them upon satisfactory completion. Manages the email account for the locksmith department.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications
Graduated with a standard high school and the combined education and experience equivalent to five years related to the key roles and responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
A minimum of two years of work experience with low voltage electronic and non electronic door hardware. Locksmith experience strongly preferred.
Licenses/Certifications:
Must have a valid driver's license.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Knowledge
- Knowledge of basic door hardware and master keying systems.
- Knowledge of SimpleK software preferred.
- Knowledge of Schlege and Sargent hardware and keying systems preferred.
- Knowledge of low voltage power supplies, relays and wire circuits.
- Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Skills in the use of hand tools and equipment associated with locksmithing and associated hardware
- Skill in the use of computers, preferably in a PC, Windows-based operating environment.
- Skill in utilizing building security and lock systems and procedures.
- Good verbal communication skills to deliver quality customer service with internal clients.
- Possesses color acuity required to identify color-coded technical and electronic circuitry and wiring.
- Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
- Ability to pull/fish wire thru conduit and cable trays.
- Ability to interpret, implement, and maintain pre-defined master key systems.
- Ability to install, troubleshoot, and repair both mechanical locking and electronic access control devices.
- Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
