Position Summary:
The Division of General, Minimally Invasive & Robotic Surgery, in the Department of Surgery at the University of Illinois Chicago is seeking a Physician Assistant (PA).
The PA is responsible for the health outcome of an assigned patient population and consults and confers with supervising physicians in an area of clinical expertise within the PA's scope of licensure. As an integral member of a general surgical team, the physician assistant is responsible for the pre, intra and post-surgical care of general surgery patients, under the direct supervision of the General Surgeon. This includes the evaluation, monitoring, diagnostic, and counseling and referrals of general surgery patients. "Direct supervision" shall be interpreted as the General Surgeon being present in the same facility as the Assistant or within a reasonable travel distance of the facility.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Works collaboratively with other providers in the care of patients.
- Performs an accurate history and physical examination of patients. Conducts comprehensive or episodic health assessments and develops patient care plans.
- Performs procedures according to clinical delineation of privileges. Provides prevention strategies and management of acute and chronic health problems. Orders and interprets tests, treatments, and therapies within the scope of practice.
- Prescribes medications, diet, supplies, prosthetic devices, and other home health aides or medication according to clinical privileges.
- Provides clear, concise, accurate, and legible documentation regarding patient care in the medical record.
- Provides education to patients, families, and significant others using established education materials.
- Integrates evidence-based knowledge and clinical expertise in decision-making.
- Provides comprehensive teaching strategies for patients and their families. Provides formal and/or informal education or mentorship to both internal and external groups pertinent to area of specialty.
- Acts as a resource for clinical staff in the practice setting.
- Leads multidisciplinary teams to provide integrated delivery of patient care services.
- First and second assistance with suturing and other surgical procedures.
- Assist in clinical and basic science projects such as client reviews, implant retrieval studies, and registry data gathering.
- Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited PA program.
- Current license as a Physician Assistant in the State of Illinois required.
- Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required.
- Current controlled substance licensure required.
- Current National Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
