Gardener - Container & Interior Design Support

Job Summary

The Horticulture Department at Red Butte Garden is seeking a part-time gardener to assist our Container and Interior Designer with plant display maintenance and general greenhouse care. Primary duties include supporting horticulture staff in creating and maintaining high-quality displays across the garden's public spaces and event venues. This role also assists with day-to-day operations, including watering, plant detailing, and general plant care. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, adaptable, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team. We strongly prefer people who are committed to the role of a Botanical Garden within the community and want to be a part of a great team!

Responsibilities
Providing excellent plant care within our greenhouses and seasonal plant display areas.
  • Ensuring plants are healthy through proper watering, weeding, detailing, and general greenhouse upkeep. Other plant care duties include transplanting, deadheading, pruning, and basic propagation.
  • Hand watering plants daily to ensure proper moisture levels. Hand watering requires constant attention to detail for several hours a day.
  • Assisting with installation, rotation, and upkeep of interior and container plant displays.
  • Monitoring plant health in assigned spaces and report issues to horticulture staff.
  • Assisting with all greenhouse team priorities and goals including, preventative maintenance, integrated pest management, and achieving production goals.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of greenhouse facilities, operating soil mixer, working from ladders, and assisting with various outdoor tasks. Acts as steward for the Garden by greeting and answering questions from garden guests.


Minimum Qualifications
Nine months professional work experience with the responsibility for five or more acres of grounds, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); a valid Utah vehicle operator's license required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required. Selected applicant will be expected to obtain a pesticide applicator's license.

Preferences
Preferred Qualifications: Nine months professional work experience with the responsibility for five or more acres of grounds, or equivalency; (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); a valid Utah vehicle operator's license required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required. Selected applicant will be expected to obtain a pesticide applicator's license. A pesticide applicators license will not be required for this part-time, non-benefited position.
  • A passion for gardening and plants. Prior experience in landscaping, horticulture, plant displays, floral arrangements, or design work is strongly preferred.
  • A basic knowledge of horticulture, gardening, or botany, and a desire to learn more.
  • Able to work effectively individually and in teams, and willingness and ability to work cooperatively with a variety of people.
  • At least 18 years of age, have a valid driver's license, proof of insurability, and able to safely and proficiently operate equipment common to the trade.
  • Able to safely and effectively perform all physical tasks essential to the position and understand the physical commitment required for gardening.
  • Able to work safely in all climatic conditions, including full sun, heat, cold, precipitation, etc.
  • Ability to identify problems, develop possible solutions and take appropriate course of action.
  • Skills include active listening, analysis, research, creativity, communication, decision making and team-building.

Work Schedule Summary: Must be able to commit to working 19 hrs./wk. Shifts are predominately during regular business hours, from mornings to mid-afternoons, 8:00am - 4:30pm. May require occasional evening hours and/or weekend shifts. Exact schedule will be coordinated with supervisor upon hire.
