The ideal candidate for this position is an educator who actively embraces building a Vocational program to serve populations historically underrepresented and underserved in higher education. With knowledge of both the strengths embodied by our diverse students and the barriers they face, the ideal candidate is well-poised to teach, support, and mentor Gavilan students. The ideal candidate desires connection with students and the community beyond the classroom and works to foster cross-cultural and anti-racist media collaborations with Gavilan departments, student groups, and community organizations. The ideal candidate for this position will demonstrate a strong commitment to supporting students with disabilities in achieving vocational goals through individualized, student-centered instruction. This position is housed within the Gavilan College Accessible Education Center and provides instruction to the HOPE program -a private, non-profit agency offering work training, job placement, and employment services for individuals with disabilities. Gavilan students enrolled in the HOPE program gain valuable experience through instructional programming delivered onsite at HOPE Services Gilroy and Hollister, and community-based employment settings.The ideal candidate will possess the skills and experience necessary to provide individualized vocational assessment, instruction, career exploration, intensive vocational counseling, and supervised community-based work experiences. In addition to their work with HOPE, the instructor will also teach in Gavilan's on-campus CareerPrep program, which serves young adults who have completed a high school special education program and require additional support to transition into entry-level employment.
Essential Duties
The following duties are typical of those performed by employees in this job title; however, employees may perform other related duties, and not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each employee in the job title:
- Provide 14-16 equivalent hours of instruction per semester in person, in accordance with established course outlines and departmental procedures invocational/special education.
- Create, assess, and update curriculum to meet the needs of diverse students.
- Assess student needs and provide appropriate instruction in job skill, work adjustment, and employment programs.
- Maintain accurate attendance rosters, grade reports and other records required by the district.
- In conjunction with other program staff, community agencies, and family members, develop student vocational profiles, student-centered plans, and rehabilitation/instructional goals.
- Maintain an effective classroom environment and workspace;
- Represent Gavilan and provide liaison services between students with disabilities, faculty, staff, and appropriate campus and community support systems;
- Provide on-the-job support and intervention to assist with training needs.
- Assignments in a variety of settings and times, including on-campus, HOPE Gilroy or HOPE Hollister sites; evening, on-line or off-campus and large group instruction classes as needed;
- Contribute to campus committees and decision-making processes that support the college's mission and goals.
- Participate in ongoing professional learning, particularly around anti-racism, diversity, equity, access and inclusion.
- Adhere to department, division, and campus policies and procedures for faculty employees.
Minimum Qualifications, Education, and Experience
- A bachelor's degree with any of the following majors: Education of students with specific or multiple disabilities; special education; psychology; physical education with an emphasis in adaptive physical education; communicative disorders; rehabilitation; computer-based education; other computer-related majors which include course work on adapted or assistive computer technology for students with disabilities; other majors related to providing specialized instruction or services to persons with disabilities OR
- An associate degree with one of the majors specified above; and four years of experience providing specialized instruction or services to persons in the disability category or categories being served
- Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic-ethnic, cultural, disability, religious background and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.

- Ability to organize, present, and adapt instructional materials to match students' individual abilities, learning styles, and levels of preparedness.
- Knowledge of current instructional theories and effective teaching strategies, particularly for working with culturally and linguistically diverse student populations.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying informed about the latest research and best practices in special education and vocational instruction.
- Proven ability to build and maintain collaborative working relationships with Accessible Education Center (AEC) faculty and staff to promote student success.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to document and follow through on student plans and services.
- Demonstrated experience supporting the education, training, or employment of individuals with disabilities.
- Experience in developing individualized vocational plans and assisting students in identifying and working toward appropriate career goals and community employment opportunities.
- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively as part of an interagency team, contributing to coordinated service delivery and student transition planning.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Ability to conduct classes in a virtual learning environment using Canvas or other methods of remote learning.
- Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility.
- Strategically build support and participation among colleagues for equity-related initiatives.
- Teach through positive race-consciousness and embracing human difference.
- Communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues (within discipline and college-wide) on matters regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that would enhance the development of the department and college.
