Gardener - Plant Production Support

Job Summary

The Horticulture Department at Red Butte Garden is seeking a part-time gardener to assist our Greenhouse Grower with production goals and plant care. This role will focus on propagation, inventory, pest monitoring, transplanting, and other tasks that ensure healthy, high-quality plants for the garden's collections, displays, and sales. This role also assists with day-to-day operations, including watering, plant detailing, and general cleanup. We strongly prefer people who are committed to the role of a Botanical Garden within the community and want to be a part of a great team!

Responsibilities
Providing excellent plant care within our greenhouses and support production goals.
  • Ensure plants are healthy through proper watering, weeding, detailing, and general greenhouse upkeep. Other plant care duties include transplanting, deadheading, pruning, and basic propagation.
  • Hand watering plants daily to insure proper moisture levels. Hand watering requires constant attention to detail for several hours a day.
  • Assists with sowing seeds, vegetative propagation, and transplanting.
  • Water, fertilize, and monitor plant health as assigned.
  • Support inventory tracking and labeling of plants.
  • Assisting with all greenhouse team priorities and goals including installing and maintaining seasonal displays, integrated pest management, preventative maintenance, and achieving production goals.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of greenhouse facilities, operating soil mixer, working from ladders, and assisting with various outdoor tasks. Acts as steward for the Garden by greeting and answering questions from garden guests.


Minimum Qualifications
Nine months professional work experience with the responsibility for five or more acres of grounds, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); a valid Utah vehicle operator's license required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required. Selected applicant will be expected to obtain a pesticide applicator's license.

Preferences
Preferred Qualifications: Nine months professional work experience with the responsibility for five or more acres of grounds, or equivalency; (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); a valid Utah vehicle operator's license required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required. Selected applicant will be expected to obtain a pesticide applicator's license. A pesticide applicators license will not be required for this part-time, non-benefited position.
  • A passion for gardening and plants. Prior experience in greenhouse production, horticulture, or botany strongly preferred.
  • A basic knowledge of horticulture, gardening, or botany, and a desire to learn more.
  • Able to work effectively individually and in teams, and the willingness and ability to work cooperatively with a variety of people.
  • At least 18 years of age, have a valid driver's license, proof of insurability, and able to safely and proficiently operate equipment common to the trade.
  • Able to safely and effectively perform all physical tasks essential to the position and understand the physical commitment required for gardening.
  • Able to work safely in all climatic conditions, including full sun, heat, cold, precipitation, etc.
  • Ability to identify problems, develop possible solutions and take appropriate course of action. Skills include active listening, analysis, research, creativity, communication, decision making and team-building.

Work Schedule Summary: Must be able to commit to working 19 hrs./wk. Shifts are predominately during regular business hours, from mornings to mid-afternoons, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. May require occasional evening hours and/or weekend shifts. Exact schedule will be coordinated with supervisor upon hire.
