Summary of Responsibilities
- Operate wide-format printers to produce displays, posters, signage, vehicle wraps, window graphics, wall murals, and other high-resolution prints for a variety of indoor and outdoor applications. Supervise and mentor part-time employees assigned to specialty printing projects. Provide task instructions, monitor output quality, and assist with onboarding and safety training as needed.
- Operate cutting, trimming, mounting, laminating, and vinyl application equipment. Apply printed or cut vinyl graphics to surfaces, including vehicles, glass, and sign substrates. Maintain an appropriate inventory of specialty printing supplies, substrates, and adhesives.
- Operate engraving machines, plotters, and flatbed inkjet printers to produce signage, name tags, plaques, displays, promotional items swag, and wayfinding materials.
- Research and develop new processes, materials, and substrates to expand service offerings and improve production quality and efficiency. Conduct prototyping under the direction of the department head.
- Assess, evaluate, and manipulate design files in preparation for production. Identify and resolve file issues; communicate with clients regarding file requirements and recommendations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications
High school diploma or equivalent and three years of experience, or a combination of post-high school education and experience equal to three years.
Preferred Qualifications:
At least two years of formal post-high school training and education in the visual arts field and at least two years of related full-time employment.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Knowledge
- General knowledge of art composition and photographic principles.
- Extensive working knowledge of the equipment, supplies, and materials used in the specialty printing industry, including wide format printing, engraving, plotting, mounting, vinyl cutting, laminating, presentation of art, posters, banners, displays, wraps, and promotional products.
- Extensive working knowledge of the software products used to create print media, including
- Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Acrobat.
- Knowledge of the various file types and formats typically used in print media design, including their uses, strengths, and limitations.
- An in-depth knowledge and understanding of print resolution and its impact on print quality and clarity.
- Understanding of vinyl materials and adhesives used for signage, vehicle wraps, and glass applications.
- Knowledge of prototyping techniques and materials research relevant to wide format and specialty printing.
- Familiarity with R&D practices in the print industry and process improvement strategies.
- Skill using standard graphic design software (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat).
- Skill and experience operating art mounting equipment, automated cutting devices, and various types of electronic printing equipment.
- Basic skills in art composition.
- Skilled at operating digital printing devices, including various printers, plotters, engravers, and related equipment.
- Skilled in vinyl application, including wrapping techniques for vehicles and windows.
- Skill in evaluating and testing new print media, substrates, and application processes.
- Competent in prototyping and documenting findings related to new products and production methods.
- Ability to troubleshoot and refine existing workflows for increased efficiency and quality.
- Ability to multitask.
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers and workmates.
- Ability to plan, schedule, and prioritize many projects simultaneously in order to successfully manage commitments and deadlines and maintain a high level of productivity.
- Strong ability to assess and evaluate service and performance-related issues with the supplies, materials, and equipment used in the specialty printing industry.
- Strong ability to see fine detail in printed materials and evaluate color accuracy and print quality.
- Ability to use standard graphic design software programs, to correct, enhance, manipulate, and modify electronic art and design files.
- Ability to recognize issues with customer files and recommend solutions.
