Assistant/Associate Professor of English Language Arts/Literacy

The College of Education at Empire State University seeks an Assistant/Associate Professor in English Language Arts (ELA)/Literacy. The successful candidate will have expertise in Literacy/English Language Arts education and will teach, develop curriculum, and mentor/advise students in programs offered both synchronously and asynchronously. Central to the faculty role is helping adults from diverse cultural backgrounds design and complete degrees that meet their personal and professional goals. SUNY Empire faculty provide individualized advising from entry through graduation to students in their overall academic program, including design of the degree and identifying opportunities for prior learning assessment.

A highly distributed organization, SUNY Empire makes extensive use of technological applications for communication, teaching and learning, and administrative purposes. Working in cooperation with local and statewide faculty and staff, the successful candidate will provide high-quality educational services to students, engage in an active scholarly agenda, participate in university governance, and enhance the university's reputation within the community.

Job Requirements:
.Required Qualifications:
  • An earned doctorate from a regionally accredited U.S. university or comparable non-U.S. university in English Language Arts (ELA/Literacy).
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in secondary (7-12) classroom teaching ELA.
  • Valid teacher certification in ELA grades 7-12.
  • Specialization in ELA instruction with skills in literacy and reading.
  • College-level teaching experience.
  • Experience with learning technologies, online teaching, and course development.
  • Effective interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience in academic program development, including the design and implementation of innovative delivery models and individualized learning pathways.
  • Proven record of mentoring and teaching non-traditional students from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the clinical supervision of both pre-service and in-service teachers, ensuring the development of effective instructional practices.
  • Collaborative experience working with field supervisors to align academic instruction with student needs and field-based requirements.
  • Strong commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within higher education and through active engagement in community-based initiatives.
  • Recognized scholarly contributions in the areas of literacy, reading, and English Language Arts (ELA), with a sustained record of academic achievement and publication.

Special Information:
  • Occasional travel will be required to fulfill university-wide commitments.
  • Office hours will vary to accommodate student needs.
  • Some evening and/or weekend engagement with students is required.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis. VISA sponsorship is not available for this position.

Additional Information:
Rank/Salary: Tenure-track, assistant/associate professor, minimum starting salary of $80,000, appointment and salary to commensurate with experience and qualifications.
