Job Summary
The University of Utah seeks a highly organized, motivated, and collaborative leader to serve as the Associate Director of Student Support (ADSS), As part of the Office of the Dean of Students, the ADSS reports directly to the Director of Student Support.
The Student Support team focuses on behavioral intervention and encourages the emotional, physical, academic, and social well-being of students living on campus and within the University community. The ADSS is responsible for creating and implementing a vision for student support for university students living on campus, which includes student crisis response, effective case management, building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders, student risk assessment, and proactive outreach and education. Additionally, the ADSS will update and create needed policies, procedures, and processes to support the vision of student support between the Office of the Dean of Students and the Office of Residence Life in collaboration with the Director of Student Support.
Using a broad knowledge base of mental health issues, behavioral risk assessment, crisis intervention skills, and student development theory, the ADSS provides leadership in four main areas: 1) case management, 2) supervision of Resident Outreach Coordinators (ROCs), 3) Support of the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT), and 4) outreach and education to the campus community.

Responsibilities
1. Case Management
- Serves as a lead student support case manager and oversees all of the CARE/BIT cases.
- Understands, analyzes, interprets, evaluates, and applies policies and procedures under University policy and state/federal laws on privacy and mandatory reporting (e.g., FERPA, Clery Act, discrimination, due process, etc.).
- Provides ongoing support for residential students who are experiencing barriers to their success, including but not limited to academic challenges, physical and psychological health, behavioral misconduct, family and personal relationships, and social adjustment concerns.
- Supports coordination of services, when needed, related to basic needs resources available to students through University of Utah departments and centers.
- Responds to students in crisis.
- Serve as after business hour support for on-call staff through the AD on-call rotation, as part of the ODOS/HRE department response team in the case of an emergency. Thorough response to critical inquiries or needs from families, students, staff, faculty, alumni, and other campus constituents is an expectation along with knowledge of legal issues pertinent to housing.
- Responds to behavioral concerns as reported by members of the University community and, when necessary, refers students to on- and off-campus resources.
- Offers significant input and assistance in the formulation of interventions and support strategies for students.
- As appropriate, coordinates and collaborates with healthcare providers, parents, and University personnel to respond to students effectively.
- Provides a personal and high-touch response to student needs.
- Oversees adjustments and changes to the database used to document and update referrals, interventions, and student information.
- Maintains records for all behavioral cases and uses Advocate to track student trends and metrics that inform programmatic interventions, policy and procedures, and long-term planning.
- Supports, supervises, trains, and develops case managers (resident outreach coordinators).
- Conducts and participates in annual performance evaluations.
3. Support of the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT)
- Provides support and record-keeping responsibility for the BIT. The BIT is a multidisciplinary team that provides appropriate interventions and support to at-risk individuals. Areas of campus often represented on BIT include Campus Police, Housing & Residential Education, University Counseling Center, Office of Equal Opportunity, Student Accountability, Academic Advising, General Counsel, Human Resources, Center for Disability & Access, Faculty, and several additional ad hoc members.
- Facilitates the BIT meetings or smaller case staffing of BIT members, in the absence of the Director of Student Support.
- Assist in the selection, onboarding, and training of BIT members.
- As needed, organizes "student of concern" meetings with appropriate BIT members and other campus partners.
- Coordinates information gathering before and during the BIT meeting, facilitates action item follow-up and maintains appropriate records, including BIT meeting minutes.
- Regularly assesses and enhances the effectiveness of the BIT's processes, student referral experience, and case management.
4. Outreach and Education to the Campus Community
- Develops and provides training and education to campus entities regarding indicators of distress/concern, student behavioral issues, intervention strategies, and current national and University trends in behavioral intervention.
- Develops and reviews an outreach calendar, procedures for assessment, and makes curriculum recommendations to the Director of Student Support.
- Presents or co-presents at New Student Orientation, new faculty orientation, and various departmental or college training as requested.
- Actively contributes to the overall campus safety efforts.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Business or Public Administration, a related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Six years of progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communication skills also required.
Master's degree in Business Administration or related area preferred.

Preferences
- Direct experience with crisis intervention, threat assessment, conflict resolution, and case management.
- Training and affiliation with related professional associations (e.g., NaBITA, HECMA, ATAP, etc.)
- Experience working with campus and community resources.
- Experience delivering campus outreach and education to faculty, staff, students, and parents.
- Experience working in settings with students from diverse backgrounds and a strong commitment to historically underrepresented students.
- Working understanding of FERPA, Clery Act, Title IX, VAWA, etc.
- Working understanding of promising practices of Housing and Residential Education
- Experience with case management software (e.g., Advocate, Maxient, etc.).
