Major Duties

Under general supervision of the Black Scholars Matter (BSM) Program Director, the BSM Advising Assistant advises student scholars individually or in groups, offering academic and career guidance. The role also contributes significantly to program marketing and brand visibility through creative campaigns, and maintains active communication with BSM Empowerment Squad members.
  • Advises students individually and/or groups regarding appropriate class selection, academic policies, procedures and campus resources.
  • Assists students throughout the year with academic and college life skill-building, providing support, advisement and mentoring that embodies a holistic approach.
  • Assists in the exploration of academic programs in the creative fields.
  • Supports Scholars in their pursuit of BSM community engagement/service learning and experiential activities in the Arts and Culture Community Engagement trajectory.
  • Facilitates purposeful and relevant educational workshops, programs and activities for Scholars.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, communication, public or business administration, creative or a job-related fields.
  • Equivalent to one year of experience in professional Student Services work at the entry trainee level.
  • A Master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for the required experience.



Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge, appreciation and understanding of African/Black/African American Culture.
  • Understand best practices for advisement and student mentoring.
  • Knowledge of higher education trends.
  • Understand digital marketing and brand messaging.
  • Ability to assist with marketing and PR campaigns.
  • Knowledge of social media and social media management; Understands event planning, event production and event management.
  • Knowledge of best practices in photography and videography and first-class written and spoken communication.
  • Understand and have familiarity with print, typography, and layout skills.



Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
  • The university offers an excellent benefits package, including but not limited to: medical, dental, vision, retirement & savings, tuition waiver and more.
  • Classification: SPP IB / 3079 / grade 2
  • The anticipated HIRING RATE is $2801 (part time equivalent) per month. The salary range for this classification is: $2801- $3964 (part time equivalent) per month.
  • HOURS: Part Time; 25 hours per week; Monday through Friday.
  • This is a Temporary position; end date to be determined.
  • The position is currently hybrid (3 days in office, 1 day remote); however, this is subject to change based on student and/or operational needs.
