Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) at CU Boulder encourages applications for a Temporary Asbestos/Lead Specialist! The position primarily conducts building audits independently and surveys of university facilities and equipment to determine the location of regulated building materials (e.g., asbestos, lead, etc.) and assist with and coordinate abatement activities.

Who We Are
EH&S provides comprehensive safety oversight, training, compliance assurance and hazardous material management/disposal services to all campus operations (research, general fund operations, auxiliary operations, events, etc.). We coordinate with University Risk Management regarding campus safety liabilities/risks and develop programs to proactively address issues; develop and implement occupational safety programs that work to reduce risk management liabilities and claims, and coordinate responses to critical campus incidents and ensure appropriate hazard mitigation and remediation for hazardous materials incidents in full compliance with local, federal, and/or state regulations.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- Bulk sample collection and submission of samples to approved laboratories for analysis.
- Logging bulk samples into a University run database.
- Using a portable X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) instrument to identify lead containing coatings in both commercial and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulated facilities.
- Collection of air samples in compliance with Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) Regulation 8 abatement clearance criteria and comparison to.
- Maximum Allowable Asbestos Limit monitoring.
- OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit monitoring.
- Verbal and written recommendations for accurate asbestos and lead based paint operations on campus to staff and contractors within guidelines from the Asbestos Coordinator. This includes abatement, construction, renovation, and demolition projects, and operations and maintenance activities conducted by campus staff.
Additional Responsibilities
- Maintain EH&S industrial hygiene equipment, environmental monitoring supplies, meters, emergency response equipment, etc., ensuring they are charged, calibrated, and ready for use.
- Assist with emergency responses to potential asbestos releases on campus during work hours, ensuring mitigation actions are conducted in compliance with applicable campus standards, policies, and industrial hygiene guidance/recommendations, ensuring safety for campus faculty, staff and students.
- Keep current with all State, EPA, and campus certifications and trainings.
What You Should Know
This in-person position will work Monday - Friday during regular business hours. The position is expected to work 40 hours a week and is anticipated to last for about 6 months with the possibility of being extended for up to a year.
What We Can Offer
The hourly pay for this position is $35.00 per hour.

What We Require
- Three years' experience performing asbestos inspections/surveys and collecting air samples as a CDPHE certified Air Monitoring Specialist.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Must be a CDPHE certified Asbestos Building Inspector and Air Monitoring Specialist.
- Able to pass a pre-placement physical.
