About the Department:

The mission of the University Advising Center (UAC) is to partner with pre-major students as they take ownership of their academic experiences at SMU and develop independent informed decision-making skills. The UAC also offers pre-professional advising services for students interested in Pre-Health or Pre-Law advising.

The University Advising Center is located within the Division of Student Academic Engagement and Success at SMU. Student Academic Engagement and Success (SAES) is a division within the Office of the Provost at SMU that oversees a wide range of academic support and engagement offices and initiatives. Our office strives to enrich the Mustang experience both inside and outside the classroom. Dedicated to facilitating student engagement and academic achievement, SAES connects students to resources that allow them to thrive on and off campus

About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

This position will serve as an academic advisor to University pre-major and declared students within Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences, Simmons School of Education and Human Development, and/or Meadows School of the Arts. The advisor will be engaged in academic advising activities that support the college in the delivery of advising.

Essential Functions:

  • Guide students in selection of courses, assist students in major exploration and selection, monitor progress of advisees towards the fulfillment of academic goals and requirements, maintain knowledge of academic programs, regulations, and procedures. Counsel students who need additional support and connect students to campus resources.

  • Serve on UAC and SMU Committees/working groups. Assist with departmental events.

  • Occasional evening/weekend hours may be required during summer Orientation.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor's degree is required. A Master's degree is preferred.

A minimum of two (2) years of experience is required. Experience in academic advising, teaching, higher education, and/or counseling is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.

Candidate must be able to demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).

Physical and Environmental Demands:
  • Sit for long periods of time
