SENIOR DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT, SURGERY & OTOLARYNGOLOGY

Job Summary

The Senior Director of Advancement (SDOA) directs fundraising activities for the Departments of Surgery and Otolaryngology by building a robust community of philanthropic support by partnering with physicians, leadership, and care teams. This includes, but is not limited to, case development, creating appeals, cultivating donors and prospective donors, soliciting gifts, and ensuring all gifts are acknowledged.

Works closely with Department Chairs and leaders to develop and implement fundraising priorities, strategy, programs, and financial objectives for departments. The focus of this role is major and principal solicitations. Establishes goals and strategies for fundraising campaigns. Acts as a catalyst between departments, faculty, staff, training alumni, and external entities to ensure continuity and quality of service. Develops long-term donor relationships and solicits gifts in the 6 to 7-figure range. Supervises one or more employees. Strengthens grateful patient programming within the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine.

The SDOA directs fundraising activities for the Departments of Surgery and Otolaryngology in concert with a team of University Advancement professionals and reports directly to the Principal Director of Advancement for Hospitals and Clinics within the University of Utah Health Advancement Office. The SDOA also supervises a team of Directors and Associate Director roles within the clinical team. 

Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
Directs development activities for Departments of Surgery and Otolaryngology, including case development, creating appeals, cultivating donors and prospective donors, soliciting gifts, and ensuring all gifts are acknowledged.
Prepares proposals by conducting research, coordinating with departments and faculty, meeting with potential donors, corporations, or foundations, and writing proposals and budgets for submission
Plans strategies and goals to increase fund-raising effectiveness with a focus on major giving and principal giving. This may also include grateful patients, individual, corporate and foundation giving, annual giving, capital campaigns, planned giving, communications, and events.
Collaborates with senior administrators, Department Chairs, and faculty to identify initiatives for grateful patient fundraising, fund development and plan campaigns.
Analyzes market research and performance data to aid in fundraising.
Develops long-term relationships with higher level actual and potential donors and solicits gifts in the 6 to 7-figure range.
Ensures appropriate recognition and stewardship of donors.
Oversees or partners with marketing professionals to manage donor communications.
Ensures gifts are deposited correctly and reconciled with accounting system.
Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates staff in the School of Medicine.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree or equivalent experience (One year of education is equivalent to two years of experience).
  • Four years of related experience
