Under the direction of the Executive Dean of Learning, the Director, Library Services, leads and manages library services and information services District-wide to support the academic and research needs of students, faculty, and staff and to provide technical assistance on instructional support issues. The role involves strategic planning, resource management including digital literacy and open educational resources (OER), and implementation of modern library technologies to enhance learning and research across the District.

Work requires the use of independent judgment, prioritizing while working from broad institutional and divisional policies and general objectives. Communication is continuous between the division, industry partners, and specialized agencies.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities


  • Operations and Strategic Planning: Oversees the operation of the four campus libraries to provide services to students, faculty, staff and administration. Provides leadership in the establishment of long and short-range goals and planning for the college libraries; consults with campus executive directors, administrators, deans, faculty, and students to determine library and instructional support needs. Coordinates library information literacy programming District-wide for faculty and students to enhance teaching and learning. Develops programming and marketing strategies to increase library awareness including developing content for the library website.
  • Resource Management and Acquisition: Manages the acquisition, organization, and maintenance of library resources and materials, including digital and print materials as well as library databases. Facilitates faculty and staff participation in the collection development process including review and recommendation of purchases across the district.
  • Training and Education: Provides training and consultation to faculty, staff, and leadership on library resources and the use of database tools. Delivers Copyright training to faculty and staff and updates Copyright information for the college.
  • Regulatory Compliance, Accreditation and Reporting: Addresses, evaluates, and ensures compliance with regional accreditation compliance and institutional requirements for library services. Collects data and prepares reports as required by the District, state or federal government.
  • Programming and Policy Development: Assists in evaluating library programs and services for effectiveness; recommends appropriate measures for modification or improvement. Advises library personnel in efficient implementation of library procedures; ensures quality of public and technical services.
  • Data-Driven Decision Making and Continuous Improvement: Leverages data analytics to drive informed decision-making and fosters continuous improvement within the area of responsibility. Analyzes key performance indicators (KPIs) and relevant metrics to gain actionable insights and monitors performance measures aligned with organizational goals. Utilities data to inform strategic and operational decisions.
  • Applies continuous improvement methodologies (e.g., Plan-Do-Study-Act) based on data analysis promoting a data-driven culture and enhancing team data literacy.
  • Ethics and Confidentiality: Practices honesty by demonstrating a consistent and uncompromising adherence to strong moral and ethical principles, values, truthfulness, and accuracy in all actions. Addresses all student and employee behavior in a confidential and respectful manner.
  • Budget Planning and Fiscal Administration: Develops annual operating and capital budgets for all campus libraries in accordance with institutional policies and ensures effective operations within those controls and monitors all expenditures.
  • Cross Functional Relationships and Collaborative Teamwork: Establishes, maintains, and enhances positive work relationships with staff, faculty, administrators, students, and other stakeholders. Collaborates across college departments to maximize services to students.
  • Leadership and Supervision: Develops and manages a high performing team that is highly skilled and motivates staff to remain focused on the delivery of quality and value-added services and allocates cross-functional responsibilities and work processes. Responsibilities include hiring, coaching/mentoring, performance management, and progressive discipline as needed.
  • Continuous Learning & Professional Development: Maintains current knowledge of best practices and standards in higher education with an emphasis on community colleges. Actively organizes and/or participates in applicable workgroups, trainings, workshops, seminars, committees and professional associations or conferences to promote continuous learning.
  • Other duties: Performs other related duties within the scope of the position as required for the efficient operation of the division and to support institutional objectives.


Qualifications


Compliance with all state, federal, and accreditation standards/requirement, as well as all MATC policies and procedures.

Required Education & Experience: Master's degree in Library Science, Administration or related field from a school accredited by the American Library Association, and five (5) years of related work experience with three (3) years of supervisory experience or one (1) year of staff supervision combined with an Emerging Leaders equivalency.

Preferred Education & Experience: Master's degree in Library Science, Administration or related field from a school accredited by the American Library Association, and more than five (5) years of related work experience with more than three (3) years of supervisory experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Advanced knowledge of the principles and practices of library science and information services.
  • Knowledge of academic library services in a two-year, technical or community college setting.
  • Knowledge of books and instructional resources related to technical education collection development.
  • Experience in creation and delivery of library and information resources instruction to students and faculty.
  • Ability to apply standard library methods in the performance of acquisition, classification, and cataloging, reference and general or special circulation, and other library services.
  • Ability to overcome obstacles by engaging outside resources or utilizing executive direction.

Supplemental Information

Start Date
This position supports the Academic Services Department and is available to start as soon as possible.

Hours
This position is a 1.0 FTE or 40 hours per work week. Hours are Monday through Friday from 8am - 4:30pm.

Salary
Salary is listed to the midpoint of the salary range and is based on the 2025 rates. Salary is determined by years of experience credit and internal salary equity.
