Position Summary:
The Librarian performs a broad range of professional responsibilities of librarianship in the library or learning resource center of a Community College, providing library services to students, faculty, and citizens of the communities served by the College.
These professional responsibilities encompass a broad-spectrum including reference services; online, original, and copy cataloging; inter-library loan management; collection development; circulation management; acquisitions; and teaching students and faculty in the use of such library resources as online access to information, bibliographic search, access to print materials and methods of research for academic course materials. In addition, the library relies to an increasing extent on computer-based information technology. Therefore, the Librarian may be assigned to provide professional information technology services.
Example of Job Duties:
Under the direction of the Library Director or other administrator, the Librarian is accountable for providing useful and helpful support to the learning mission of the College through effective performance in these essential duties:
- Public and Reference Services:
- accountable for providing useful and effective assistance to patrons (students, faculty, public) to contribute to the learning mission of the College.
- Technical Services:
- accountable for applying professional knowledge in organizing, selecting, and acquiring library materials to ensure their ready accessibility and appropriateness to patrons.
- Information Technology:
- accountable when assigned, for providing computer-based technical support for the library.
- Instruction:
- accountable for contributing to the success of the College's academic programs by instructing and training students and faculty in how to make effective use of library resources
- Circulation Management:
- accountable for ensuring the efficient lending and responsible recovery of library materials and for the efficient exchange of materials through interlibrary loans by performing and overseeing circulation and lending services.
- Staff Supervision:
- accountable for contributing to the effective management of the library by assisting the Library Director in the Library's management.
In addition to the accountabilities listed above, the incumbent is required to carry out the essential duties of: Attendance and participation at convocation and commencement ceremonies; Service on assigned committees and task forces; Attendance and participation at committee, staff, informational and professional meetings. These may involve attendance at evening or weekend events.

Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree in Library Science with one (1) or more years of related experience, including up to two (2) years of experience in leading or supervising others; or a combination of education, training, and experience which would lead to the competencies required for successful performance of the position's essential duties.
Incumbents are required to have demonstrated advanced knowledge and abilities in the following:
- Experience performing the full range of professional librarianship with strong competencies in public services, reference, technical services, and collection development.
- Experience providing instruction in the effective use of library resources in higher education.
- Experience leading and training support staff.
Candidates must possess proven ability to effectively work with culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse faculty, staff, and students. They are expected to have excellent interpersonal oral and written communication skills along with strong Information technology literacy skills such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams etc.).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience teaching and assessing information literacy sessions with demonstrated excellence in presentation skills
- Experience creating accessible instructional materials, such as research guides, instructional videos, tutorials, and other digital learning objects
- Experience using library discovery tools and systems such as Alma and Primo.
Starting Salary:
Minimum Salary Range: $74,604-$79,609 approximate annual plus excellent State of CT medical insurance, retirement, and related fringe benefits. The salary will be based on the selected candidate's qualifications such as education and job-related experience, and internal equity. Position may become permanent tenure track depending on funding, college needs and student enrollment.
