The Department of Biology in the College of Science and Mathematics (COSM) invites applications for two open positions. (1) A Tenure Track position of Assistant/Associate Professor of Biology focused in any area of Biomedical Sciences (67985); and (2) Tenure Track position of Assistant Professor of Biology focused in any area of Cell and Molecular Biology (67986).

The Department of Biology is an aspiring leader in biomedical research and is committed to expanding its faculty expertise in support of the anticipated expansion of biomedical jobs in Southeast Georgia. It provides undergraduate and graduate students (M.S. in Biology and Ph.D. in Environmental Science) with a challenging education that is research-based and technology-oriented. These new faculty members will support the current programs in Biology and COSM including the development of a B.S./ M.S./ ABM (accelerated bachelors to masters) in Biomedical Sciences. The department provides a foundation for life-long learning and appreciation of biological processes and biological diversity through teaching, research, and outreach. Three campuses and a variety of off-campus research facilities offer Biology students and faculty access to state-of-the-art equipment in the department including a genomics core lab, BSL-2 labs, an advanced Animal Care Facility, and the COSM Core Research Lab (CCRL).

Position Description. Reporting to the department chair, the two positions (1) Assistant/Associate Professor in Biomedical Sciences and (2) Assistant Professor in Cell and Molecular Biology, require experience in and commitment to research, teaching, and service. A doctoral degree in Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field is required. The positions include teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
(1) The successful candidate for the Biomedical Sciences position will develop a high impact, externally funded research program in one or more of the following areas: Immunology, Cancer Research, Infectious Diseases, Epidemiology, Gene Therapy, Human Symbiome, Neuroscience, Developmental Biology, One Health, or related areas with biomedical applications.
(2) The successful candidate for the Cell and Molecular position will develop a high impact, externally funded research program in one or more of the following areas: Molecular Diagnostics and Therapeutics, Metabolomics/Proteomics/Genomics, Computational Molecular Biology, Molecular Modeling and Simulations, Viral Genetics, or related fields that do not necessarily have biomedical applications.
These positions are academic 10-month tenure track appointments, and the salaries are competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:

Earned doctorate in Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Cell and Molecular Biology or a closely related field, by December 15, 2023.
Demonstrated excellence in research, as evidenced by a strong publication record.
Strong potential to attract extramural funding commensurate with an R2 institution transitioning to an R1.
Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.
Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development.
Demonstrated commitment to advancing a strong and growing research and scholarship agenda and the production of research/creative activities as appropriate to the discipline.
To qualify at the Associate Professor Rank for the Biomedical Sciences position (Search #67985) a minimum of 5 years full-time college/university teaching experience at the assistant professor level is required for the rank of associate professor along with a strong record of research and service with publications and presentations in professional venues.

Preferred Qualifications:

Postdoctoral research experience.
Student-centered (graduate and undergraduate) research experience.
Teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels.

Conditions of Employment:

Faculty are expected to contribute to the vibrant university community by engaging students, participating in events, and performing other responsibilities on-campus.
Faculty may be required to teach, conduct research, or perform service duties on any of the three campuses. Georgia Southern provides accessible transportation options between campuses.
