Job Summary & Primary Responsibilities:

The SVP is the University lead for learner engagement, classroom experience, and completion initiatives, coordinating with external bodies and working with all University departments in developing and executing programs supporting learner engagement and success.
  • This includes:
    • Continuous improvement of the learner experience
    • Creating a learner centric experience
    • Learner engagement in and out of the classroom
    • The continued implementation of the Foundations of Excellence and related priorities
    • Infusion of culture of growth and support
    • Collaboration on developing a high-quality seamless learner experience
    • Initiatives related to the spectrum of career development, co-curricular activities, life-long learning, and non-credit offerings
  • Leads on all learner facing functions including learner services, alumni services, analytics and related functions
  • Collaborates with University leaders on personnel policy and practice, budget and resource allocation, and strategic planning initiatives to help shape and achieve priorities
  • A collaborative and effective member of the University leadership team working with members of the Executive Team, and Provost's Council as well as other functional area leadership groups
  • Collaborates with and maintains strong working relationships with leaders within the University and provides an atmosphere conducive to the development and maintenance of good morale and collegiality of faculty and staff.
  • The SVP Learner Success works collaboratively with the President, Provost and EVPs in the execution of the strategy of APUS.
  • Represents the President with designated internal and external audiences.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Organization leadership and management
  • Organization development and change skills and abilities
  • Executive administration experience in higher education - Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources
  • Online education experience
  • Experience with accreditation
  • Detailed working knowledge of the inner workings of an online university system and electronic classroom platforms
  • Background in a shared services environment
  • Exceptional problem solving and decision-making ability with commitment to customer service
  • Flexible in dealing with new and innovative situations
  • A mentor and team player
  • High level of tolerance of ambiguity
  • Strong professional knowledge and demonstrated leadership in working with academics and leaders
  • Experience working with program specialty accreditation
  • A working technical knowledge of Internet, web technologies and electronic classroom platforms
  • Knowledge of needs assessment and analysis, research, benchmarking, program evaluation and development
  • Human resources and performance management background and people management skills and competencies
  • Vision and dedication to establishing online education of excellence for adult learners, with a strong results orientation needed to implement systems and procedures to make this vision a reality
  • Strong oral, written, organizational, and presentation skills and a proven record of effective team building and relationship building

Experience and Education:
  • An earned advanced degree in related field (doctorate required in related field)
  • At least ten (10) years' experience actively working in higher education administration
  • Proven experience in leadership and management
  • Experience in for-profit higher education as well as traditional higher education highly valued

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Travel:
  • Hybrid remote work environment; office provided in Charles Town, West Virginia for travel as needed
  • Commuting between APUS headquarters and other locations may be required
  • Able to meet critical and short notice delivery deadlines
  • Able to work collaborative and effectively in a team environment and on various committees
