Responsibilities*
The Institute for Research on Innovation and Science (IRIS) is seeking a Programmer Analyst Associate with a working knowledge of Python and SQL to contribute to training efforts being developed to promote research capacity with big data and to play a hands-on role in cleaning and linking large datasets. You will bring hands-on technical expertise to a fast-paced technical team.

This is a fixed-term appointment for two years with a possible extension to a third year depending on availability of funding.

Effort devoted to training activities and to data production work will fluctuate depending on timing of trainings and other external demands that cannot be foreseen at this time. Administratively the position will sit within the IRIS data team and will be supervised by the Lead Programmer with dotted line reporting to the Research Manager, who will jointly assess job performance.

Training activities (under the direction of the Executive Director and Research Manager) include:
  • Contribute to efforts to develop instructional materials by adapting existing material, data, and exercises for training opportunities.
  • Provide technical and research support to learners by responding to data and technical questions in training settings, as well as providing ongoing participant support.
  • Coordinate the work of several master's students who will provide both technical support for participants and general administrative support for training.

Data production activities (under the direction of the Lead Programmer) include:
  • Assist in writing code to clean, standardize, link, and process large datasets.
  • Analyze complex data processing applications/challenges and conceptualize solutions.
  • Identify and download datasets for linkage purposes. Contribute to the development of code to link these datasets, identifying and resolving potential issues.

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Science, Data Science, or other related field
  • At least 1 year of programming experience (may include internships and other unpaid programming experience)
  • Advanced knowledge of or experience with SQL and relational databases; proficiency in Python
  • Ability to work successfully in a team environment as well as independently
  • Familiarity or experience with analysis and protection of restricted data
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to multi-task easily across multiple projects; highly detail-oriented and organized
  • Experience supporting and communicating with non-technical audience
  • Effective time and project management skills

Desired Qualifications*
  • Master's degree in a relevant field and/or 4+ years of equivalent experience
  • Experience developing and presenting training materials to a variety of audiences
