Job Summary:

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Regular/contract instructors participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs, courses and other experiences that will directly result in the educational growth of the students and support advancement of the visions, missions and values of the College and District. This position will entail teaching lecture and laboratory courses in Physics for both Physics majors, majors in the sciences and general education students. The successful candidate will also have responsibility for maintaining and continuing to grow a state-of-the-art Physics program for the Science & Engineering department, and will include development, implementation and articulation of curriculum, development of facilities, and obtaining and participating in existing department grants. Cuyamaca College is a Guided Pathways college and the successful candidate will be expected to actively support a Guided Pathways approach to support student success. The department has a commitment to the use of active learning methods and technology in education and to integration of curriculum between related scientific disciplines whenever possible. It is expected that the person in this position will help to expand the department in this area. This position may include a combination of day and evening assignments, large lectures and small seminars, and is being offered by a college strongly committed to the "open door" concept serving a diverse student population. Instructors will be expected to perform other duties consistent with their faculty job description as stated in the faculty contract.

CHARACTERISTICS OF ASSIGNMENT:
1. Teach lecture and laboratory classes in physics for physics majors, engineering majors and majors in the sciences including chemistry and biology. Develop curricula and innovative teaching materials for physics courses.
2. Participate in Department of Science & Engineering planning and decision-making including preparation and implementation of operational, planning, growth and budgetary strategies.
3. Participate in the college's shared governance process and serve on college committees.
4. Assist with articulation of courses with transfer institutions.
5. Advise and mentor students in the physics program on a broad range of topics including degree requirements, strategies for academic success and career opportunities in physics and engineering.
6. Provide academic assistance to students in the physics program outside of normal class hours and demonstrate a willingness to work with and motivate these students, through activities such as club sponsorship, supervision of independent projects and development of workshops to better prepare students for academic success.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: APPLICANTS MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
1. Master's in physics, astronomy or astrophysics OR
2. Bachelor's in physics or astronomy AND Master's in engineering, mathematics, meteorology or geophysics OR
3. The equivalent. If you are applying based on "the equivalent", This form must be submitted as part of the application procedures.

NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Academic preparation for teaching and developing curriculum in Physics for Engineering/Physics majors, Physics for science majors and Physics for General Education (non-majors) at a community college. Preferred academic preparation is a Ph.D. or Master's degree in Physics.
2. A minimum of one years' experience teaching Physics, preferably at the college level, that must include teaching either engineering series physics courses or science major's physics courses.
3. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate physics concepts to students at all levels, including experience teaching in an active and collaborative learning environment.
4. Experience teaching with equipment that supports and emphasize knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to maintain a successful career in physics or engineering.
5. Evidence of a commitment to remain technically current in the field of physics and closely related physical sciences.
6. Demonstrated ability to apply current STEM learning theory to design, assess and teach innovative, multimodal, student-centered curricula including active learning methods, cross-disciplinary approaches and/or the use of problem-based case studies and original research problems in physics.
7. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
8. The ability to effectively and professionally work both independently and with teams of colleagues at all levels.
9. Demonstrated skills and experience in designing curricula responsive to the needs and interests of first generation college students and students from historically underrepresented groups in STEM.
10. Ability to provide academic assistance to students in the physics program outside of normal class hours and a willingness to work with and motivate these students, through activities such as club sponsorship, supervision of independent projects and development of workshops to better prepare students for academic success.

Preferred Qualifications:
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS Candidates will also be evaluated for the following desirable qualifications:
1. Coursework or experience in Biophysics or Engineering is highly desirable.
2. Ability to infuse information about modern physics technologies into the curriculum.
3. Experience developing instructional curriculum including laboratory exercises with an emphasis in hands on project-driven work.
4. A demonstrated desire to support overall growth and success of both the physics discipline and Science & Engineering department.
5. Experience advising and mentoring students in the physics program on a broad range of topics including degree requirements, strategies for academic success, and career opportunities in physics.
6. Commitment to a Guided Pathways approach to student success.
