California State University Dominguez Hills was established in 1960 and is one of the 23 campuses that comprise The California State University System. CSU Dominguez Hills is an urban, comprehensive public university that serves a culturally rich, diverse student body of approximately 14,000 students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Located on a 346-acre site in the South Bay portion of the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, CSU Dominguez Hills has a highly pluralistic student body, which includes a significant number of non-traditional, working adult students as well as approximately 2,000 students enrolled in distance learning programs statewide. The University, with its five Academic Colleges, has more than 300 full-time faculty members and is situated in an area characterized by an extraordinary heterogeneity of people, and an extensive array of high technology industries and professional services.

Conditions of Employment:
The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

Position Information:
This is a full-time, permanent (probationary) position.

Department: Male Success Alliance

The purpose of the Male Success Alliance program is to support students through their post secondary experience. The four goals are to: 1) Effectively guide and support students through their postsecondary experience in order to improve retention and graduation rates of men of color at CSUDH; 2) Prepare students for professional, career, and graduate school opportunities; 3) Collaborate with students, campus and external partners to cultivate community and civic engagement; 4) Encourage identity exploration and holistic development through cultural affirmation and "brave space" communities. Through coordinated efforts with campus departments, the Male Success Alliance facilitates activities that include academic coaching, career and internship programs, one-on-one and small group mentoring, and graduate school preparation. The Male Success Alliance provides a robust leadership development program to address the developmental, academic, cultural and social needs of secondary and post-secondary students.

Major Job Duties:
Under general supervision of the Director of Educational Partnerships, the incumbent will help coordinate the CSU Dominguez Hills college-level student program, and will be responsible for designing and implementing: study groups, partnerships with academic affairs, graduate school preparation workshops, Male Success Alliance (MSA) student retreats, and mentoring and career development opportunities. The incumbent will be responsible for collecting and analyzing data and helping the Director of Educational Partnerships meet operational goals and objectives, keeping abreast of current research and information relevant to the program and working with all stakeholders to maintain high quality programs and services.

Experience working with college students is required.
Knowledge of academic, social, and emotional problems confronting students, especially young men, from diverse backgrounds.
Knowledge of fundamental school and academic program principles and standards (admissions, registration, financial aid) to make effective judgments.
Working knowledge of research and interviewing techniques.
Interpersonal communication skills to clearly and effectively interact with individuals of varying ages and cultural backgrounds and effectively resolve disagreements and conflicts.
Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate skillfully and effectively with a diverse population.
Skills to organize work effectively to achieve timely progress on multiple simultaneous projects, meet deadlines, and maintain a high level of productivity.
Initiative and ability to work independently as well as cooperatively and effectively as part of a team.

Specialized Materials:
Central computer (student service information system), personal computer, calculator, photocopier, FAX, multi-line telephone system, email, and the use of a personal automobile.

Certification: Valid Driver's License

Experience and Education:
Required Education:
Equivalent to graduation from a four year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job related.

Required Experience:
Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.

A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this classification is: $4,057 - $5,769 monthly.
The maximum salary budgeted for this position by the department is $4,057 monthly.
