About the Department

The Mike Loya Center for Innovation and Commerce (MLCIC) was established in 2012 at UTEP, with the aim of engaging faculty and student-led research at the intersection of business administration and engineering. The center's core values focus on supporting multidisciplinary collaborative research to discover unique solutions to business and technology challenges. At the center, students are encouraged to be committed to their community, work collaboratively, and strive for excellence. These practices, along with innovative educational programs, allow the Mike Loya Center to empower UTEP students and faculty to be successful throughout their professional lives and contribute to the university's objective of serving as a major economic engine in the Paso del Norte region.

Position Information

Hiring Department: Mike Loya Center for Innovation and Commerce

Posting End Date: Open until filled.

Hours: up to 40 hours per week, standard Monday- Friday 8:00am- 5:00pm, flexibility is required on evenings and weekends

FLSA status: Exempt

Earliest Start Date: As soon as possible.

Salary: $80,000 - 95,000 annually.

Purpose of Position

Summary: The Center Director is a crucial leadership role responsible for strategically overseeing and shaping the activities of the Mike Loya Center for Innovation and Commerce. This position is dedicated to fostering innovation, entrepreneurial education, and on-campus entrepreneurship activities for faculty and students. The Director provides resources to support faculty and students, facilitating a conducive environment for entrepreneurship. In this role, the Director will play a key part in developing, implementing, and managing programs that empower university entrepreneurs, create a lasting impact, and elevate the institution's position in the entrepreneurship ecosystem. This position reports to the Assistant Vice President for Innovation, Commercialization, and Economic Development.

Essential Functions

Strategic Direction: Develop and execute a visionary strategic plan for the Entrepreneurship Center, aligning it with the institution's goals and fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Data Analysis: Collect and analyze data to assess the impact of the Center's programs, track key performance indicators, and make data-driven decisions for the center events and programs improvement.

Community Engagement: Build and nurture strong relationships with community to support the growth of the region's innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem, including establishing and managing an advisory board and mentor network comprising industry leaders, successful entrepreneurs, and key stakeholders who can provide strategic guidance and support to the Center's initiatives.

Collaboration and Coordination: Collaborate with various university departments and local partners to create a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem. In addition, coordinate with the Center's two resource partners: New Mexico State University's Arrowhead Center and their Studio G startup resources, and the Blackstone Launchpad.

Resource Management: Oversee endowments, budgeting, financial management, fundraising campaigns, grant writing efforts, and allocation of financial and personnel resources effectively to ensure the sustainability and growth of the Entrepreneurship Center.

Audit and Compliance: Ensure compliance with all university guidelines, policies, and regulations, including grant and endowment compliance and reporting. Responsible for the annual audit of programs and strategies. This role involves conducting a thorough review, presenting findings, and providing recommendations for potential program or strategy modifications, updates, or enhancements.

Staff Leadership: Hire, supervise, train, and evaluate staff members, graduate research students and undergraduate students fostering a collaborative and productive work environment. (Two direct reports, plus a cadre of 5-9 Graduate Research Fellows.)

Evaluations and Reports: Prepare and present university leader's comprehensive annual evaluations and reports of the Center's activities and impact.

Other Duties as Assigned: Perform additional responsibilities as required to support the Entrepreneurship Center's mission and objectives, ensuring operational efficiency and adaptability to evolving institutional needs.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree

and

Experience: Five years of related experience to include a minimum of three years of experience coordinating a similar entrepreneurship center and two years of experience in both business and engineering environments or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Applicant Should Demonstrate:

Proven experience in designing and implementing entrepreneurship and education programs.

Active participation in the startup community networks.

Strong leadership disposition with excellent communication skills.

Ability to inspire, coach, and mentor students and entrepreneurs.

Demonstrated ability to cultivate and steward important relationships within the entrepreneurship ecosystem.

Self-starter and adaptable team player with a passion for fostering innovation and entrepreneurship.
